Campus Happenings During May The 8th cohort of Certified Clinical Medical Assistants wrapped up their class in May and completed their certification exam with 100% success! On May 12th the Indiana Rural Water and Waste gathered on campus for continuing education. With a very large turnout, we were grateful they were able to use facilities at Saint Joe for their educational needs. On May 18th SJC staff participated in the DeMotte Chamber of Commerce’s “Adulting Day” at the Kankakee Valley Middle School, located just twenty miles North of campus. “Adulting Day” was a fun way for local businesses to help middle school students learn certain life skills necessary for when they are adults. On May 24th, SJC hosted a booth during WorkOne/Jasper Economic Development's Job Fair at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. This was a great networking event with local companies. With a lot of interest at our booth, we were able to share our educational opportunities with the local community members. Certified dispatchers gain not only increased competency but also professional pride and self-confidence—qualities that are critical to managing stressful situations. Certification is required to use any of the IAED Priority Dispatch Systems™. Emergency Telecommunications (ETC) is a 40-hour program produced by the IAED (International Academies of Emergency Dispatch) and is designed to train those unfamiliar with emergency communication centers to become effective 911 emergency dispatchers. The program takes an integrated teaching approach that features comprehensive content, multimedia presentations, and hands-on training. Students will learn through instructor-led lecture, discussion, video segments, audiotape review of actual 911 calls, case transcripts, hands-on practice and role-playing to increase their expertise and confidence in extreme situations. Saint Joseph’s College Spotlighted by NWI WorkOne Saint Joseph's College was chosen to be WorkOne's Provider Spotlight on Wednesday, April 20th, 2022. Saint Joe was chosen based on its very high completion rate, 100% national certification exam passing rate and high employment rate after graduation. During Saint Joseph's 30-minute presentation, Hali Chapman RMA, SJC’s Academic Program Director, presented a PowerPoint featuring our current certificate and degree programs to all of Northwest Indiana's WorkOne locations. After the presentation, Chapman led a Q&A session with many different WorkOne locations. WorkOne is the heart of Indiana’s workforce development system. WorkOne staff help our local community members find new or better jobs, choose a career, access training or get the information needed to succeed in today's job market. In addition to assistance with Saint Joe’s certification program tuition, WorkOne can provide funding assistance for some of Saint Joe’s degree programs that are considered in high demand. The WorkOne Provider Spotlight is an informational seminar for WorkOne locations followed by a Q&A. It helps educate WorkOne locations on what the spotlighted provider has to offer and their successes. WorkOne locations a further distance from the College were particularly interested in Saint Joe’s remote certificate and degree programs. Thanks to the spotlight, Saint Joseph’s College is more widely known to all of NWI's WorkOne locations. Rensselaer High School Graduate One of Newest Saint Joe Alumni Recent Rensselaer high school graduate, Lillian Davisson, daughter of Mark Davisson Class of 1993, recently became an SJC alum after receiving her Certified Phlebotomy certification. Lilly attends Indiana University as a junior studying Human Biology with a minor in Spanish. Her goal is to attend Physician Assistant school after graduation. In order to attend Physician Assistant school, Lilly needs clinical experience. She was looking for clinical experience she could complete during the school year. She found the certified phlebotomy course at Saint Joe and received a scholarship, which made her attendance possible. As well as Phlebotomy, Saint Joseph’s College offers certifications in Medical Assisting, Electrocardiogram, Nursing Assisting, Billing and Coding, and CPR. When asked about the program, Lilly says, “I like how hands-on the program was, and that the instructors were encouraging and engaging with helping the students learn to the best of their abilities.” Lilly currently works at IU Health Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana as a phlebotomist. She works from 3 am to 7:30 am drawing blood on the inpatient floors of the units in the hospital. Receiving her certification from SJC allowed her to not only get this job, but achieve the clinical experience she needs to further her schooling. She has quickly learned how valuable certified phlebotomists are in the hospital setting. Lilly shares, “I believe that these certifications are giving many people a nice introduction to the medical field, and allowing them to dip their toes in without fully committing to a four-year, intensive undergraduate degree. On top of that, it helps students like me who need patient-care interaction an opportunity to do so! My chances of getting into PA school would not be as good if Saint Joe was not offering their phlebotomy program!” We are proud to have new alumni like Lilly Davisson and many others graduating from our program. As soon as they receive their certification in their respective programs, many jobs await them. Saint Joseph’s is grateful we can provide this service to our local community including Rensselaer graduates like Lilly. With our 100% passing rate, we are confident our new alumni are prepared for their new career. If you would like more information about the healthcare certification programs offered by Saint Joseph’s College, please contact Hali Chapman, RMA, Academic Program Coordinator at (219) 866-6000 x2022 or hchapman@saintjoe.edu. Brother Tim Hemm, C.PP.S. 1947 - 2022 In February, Saint Joseph’s College lost a member of our family, Brother Tim Hemm, C.PP.S. after a lengthy illness. Brother Tim performed many functions at the college. At first, he oversaw the college’s motor pool and volunteered at St. Augustine Parish in Rensselaer. Later, he was the director of campus ministry at the college, organizing liturgies, Kairos retreats and innumerable other events to encourage students in their spiritual growth and help them find a home on campus. He also served many years as the Missionaries’ local director at the college. Called “BT” by SJC students, Brother Tim was a constant presence on campus, remaining even after the college’s operations were suspended in 2017 to help in whatever way he could with the maintenance of the place that he loved so much. That love extended to the woods and fields surrounding the college; Brother Tim was known as an excellent hunter and fisherman. Brother Tim left his mark on Saint Joseph’s College and the many student’s lives he touched. He will be greatly missed, but know he will live on in our great memories. Saint Joseph's College Names Pulver as Chancellor In its effort to return academic programming to the Rensselaer and surrounding counties, Saint Joseph’s College has named Dr. Chad Pulver Chancellor of the College. As Chancellor, Dr. Pulver will interact and assess the programming needs of the local community and serve as an outreach to the community. Pulver will establish current projects from concepts to action detailing steps to initiate programs, including resources, infrastructure, personnel, community need, and market analysis. As a local Rensselaer community member and former SJC faculty and administrator, Dr. Pulver’s familiarity with Saint Joseph’s College and the Missionaries of the Precious Blood is a tremendous asset to the SJC team. Pulver holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science from Saint Joseph’s College and a Master’s Degree and PhD from Purdue University. In 2018, he teamed up with the Jasper County Sheriff's department and created the Jasper County Substance Abuse Treatment (J-SAT) program. Pulver has provided treatment in Jasper County Jail and aided in inmate transition out of the facility. Pulver Psychological Services, PC, which opened in 2006, continues to operate and service mental health needs in our community. As the Chancellor of Saint Joseph’s College, Dr. Pulver returns to complete some unfinished business. Pulver will be the bridge to the local community, ascertaining needs and developing and implementing programs. Representing SJC, he will work with the Center for Workforce Innovations to uncover regional and state trends that SJC can leverage for new directions. He will continue conversations with area school corporations to find opportunities for programs to reach the students and families and help them further their educational and occupational goals. He will partner with local law enforcement to develop training programs for recently incarcerated individuals. Pulver states, “The C.PP.S. has a long history of doing what is needed to help communities grow. I believe that SJC can continue that tradition albeit in a new era.” Identifying community needs and opportunities when and where SJC can support positive reintegration into the community is an integral part of his new role. Ready to get started Pulver says, “I believe that SJC can provide support and connections to our community through education. We are looking for solutions to the issues that Jasper, Newton, White counties have facing them. We are actively searching for projects that will have immediate impact right where we live.” Chairman of the Board, Michael Van Eekeren shares “Saint Joseph’s College has made great progress over the past year and a half. Step by step we continue to add additional programs and staff to meet the interest and needs of our community. Dr. Pulver comes to SJC at a perfect time. As a respected leader in the greater Rensselaer area, Dr. Pulver’s relationships within the community, fellow educators, student’s and our current staff will expand our reach. Welcome back home, Chad.” Continued Success with Certification Programs The sixth Certified Phlebotomy Technician cohort finished up this month with 100% success on their national certification exam. This continues our 100% certification rate in our CPT, CCMA and EKG programs! With the growth of the program, we are pleased to announce the addition of a Nurse Practitioner to our Health Sciences department, Chantel Anderson FNP. Chantel will be teaching our EKG program. We have also added Jennifer Holder, RMA and Cheyenne Miotti, RMA to teach the evening CCMA and CPT programs. All three new instructors start teaching this month. Due to the increased enrollment numbers, we have added our 5th classroom that doubles as a lab to draw blood. On Thursday nights, all 5 classrooms are full! For-Credit Classes Begin On Saturday, January 22nd our first for credit business course began. Taught by Calumet College of Saint Joseph’s Professor Dino Ramirez, this 7-week hybrid course meets three times on campus and four times via zoom. This course is the beginning of an accelerated business degree program geared for working adults. We were pleased to offer the first course for free, with the remainder of the courses offered at an affordable price. Seven students began this program comprised of local business people, one recent Rensselaer Central grad, and one Puma from the Class of 1987! Meeting in our newly renovated computer lab, the instructor projected topics being discussed, while the students followed along on new computers available to them. Once completed the students can continue with the Business program offered at SJC or transfer the credits to the College of their choice. Two local students have enrolled in our online Cybersecurity program. In the online Associate of Applied Science in Cybersecurity program, our students will learn all the skills needed to begin or excel in a career in computer network administration to assist with preventing cyberattacks. • Merry Christmas from SJC!

During this Christmas season, here at Saint Joseph’s College we are blessed and grateful for everyone who has helped us achieve the success we have had so far. We are blessed with a great staff that works tirelessly to keep the campus running and beautiful, students happy and successful, and alumni and community well informed. The time and effort given and the love for the College is present every day and it shows with the continued growth and success of our students. One example of Pumas going above and beyond is our new instructor in the phlebotomy program. Valorie Dunn, BSN, RN, CRNI, PLNC received her Bachelors of Registered Nursing from Saint Joseph’s College in 1993. Ready for a fresh start, Valorie decided she needed something more and enrolled in the College to follow her dream of becoming a nurse. This past fall we welcomed her to our teaching staff where she is finishing up with her first class of phlebotomy students this winter. Valorie says “I LOVE Saint Joseph’s College. I was drawn here when I decided that I wanted to be a nurse. I got the best education here and this College made me the nurse I am today. I am fortunate to be able to help educate these students to be the best that they can be as Certified Phlebotomists.” In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ – Acts 20:35 The Saint Joe alumni are a special group of people. I’m sure there are thousands of stories of alumni doing extraordinary acts of kindness and giving. Through many years of College history, alumni have given back in many ways. Alumni have helped students and new graduates land fantastic jobs and internships. Alumni have brought prospective students to the College and shared their experiences. Alumni have come to campus to lecture in classes and share their real-world experiences with the students. Alumni have prayed for the College success during the good times and the bad. We are asking you today to continue to give. Pray for us. Share with others our successes. Tell fellow alumni who might not get updates, about the campus news. When we invite you to gather, join us. If you are able, make a monetary donation. Continue the Puma legacy of selflessness. Help us to graduate new Pumas! For more information on how you can help, please contact Beth Graf, Director of Communications and Development at (219) 866-6000 x2014 or bgraf@saintjoe.edu. To donate today go to www.saintjoe.edu/give or by mail at Saint Joseph’s College, PO Box 300, Rensselaer, IN 47978. May the joy of Christmas be with you and your family! Saint Joseph's College (Indiana), a Catholic college founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, pledges itself to a tradition of excellence and to a liberal education that is a united endeavor of intelligence and faith. Homecoming 2021 – Back Home On Saturday, September 18th the Saint Joseph’s Alumni came back home! The Saint Joseph’s College Alumni Association in partnership with Saint Joseph’s College welcomed over 175 alumni back to campus for a Homecoming celebration. The reunion day began with a celebration Mass in the Chapel with Father Barry Fischer, C.PP.S. and Father Bill Stang, C.PP.S. with alumnus Mark Madison leading the congregation of about 40 alumni with song. For the remainder of the day, alumni gathered at Lake Banet to meet their friends and former professors. The traditional beer and brats were served by the Alumni Association volunteers. Almost 200 alumni gathered on the beautiful fall day to reminisce about their days at Saint Joe and catch up on where they are now. Many alumni participated in campus tours. Alumni were encouraged to join the tour and take a walk along memory lane. Young and old joined in the tours to received updates on the College’s progress over the last few years. During the tours a special event was planned. Bobby Kametas ‘17 and Harley Conn ‘19 were engaged by the fountain with friends, family and unsuspecting touring alumni present. Saint Joseph’s College would like to thank the Alumni Association for their hard work and dedication to bring Homecoming back to campus. Their volunteers worked tirelessly to organize the day and make it special for the many alumni who made the trek back to Rensselaer. We are grateful for their continued efforts and support of our beautiful campus. Where We Are Today Radio advertisements, newsletters, interviews, campus tours, enhanced webpage, new academic center, open houses, alumni events, fliers—all from Saint Joseph’s College! What is happening? As the College set out on its ambitious task of reinventing itself in 2017, the Board promised to secure the debt and to come back as a liberal arts institution. What is happening on the Rensselaer campus is the realization of that promise of the College continuing its mission and providing state-of-the-art programming. Saint Joseph's college is excited to announce for January three exciting new university/college partnerships including the University of Saint Thomas (Houston), Calumet College of Saint Joseph, and St. Mary of the Woods College. Programs to be offered to local at the College include cybersecurity, business, and a wide variety of health care programs. For more information contact Hali Chapman at (219) 866-6000 x2022. Building on the success of the last year and the promise of career-oriented education in the “128 Plan,” the College will continue offering its health care certification programs including American Red Cross (CPR), Billing and Coding, EKG, Certified Nursing Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant, and Phlebotomy. Students who have completed these programs have been very successful in attaining jobs in health care. Additional career certification programs are under development. Looking to the future and responding to community needs, additional institutions will be invited to offer their programs on the Rensselaer campus. Saint Joseph College is offering state-of-the-art programs at affordable prices. To this end, the University of Saint Thomas and Calumet College of Saint Joseph's will offer their first courses for free. The ongoing tuition for these programs will be affordable. Scholarships will also be available moving forward. What is happening at Saint Joseph's College and Rensselaer is truly remarkable. Throughout its 130-year history, it had to adapt. A theme developed in 2017 was that the College would be like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. What's going on now is a testament to the Phoenix beginning to rise. Saint Joseph's College looks forward to community support and partnership as we make this a state-of-the-art institution for the 21st century. As an alum said on a recent visit to the College, “we realize that our SJC is gone but it is encouraging that a re-envisioned 21st Century college will slowly emerge beginning with a few college-level classes this fall.” GivingTuesday – How You Can Help! The global generosity movement known as GivingTuesday is fast approaching! Now more than ever it is important to give back to our communities and charities we love. We encourage all of our alumni and friends to support your local communities not just on Tuesday, November 30th, but everyday! In the spirit of giving here are some ways you can give back to Saint Joseph’s College: Pray for us! Pray that we are guided by our mission to do the Lord’s work here in the Rensselaer Community. How the College would come back would be outlined in a “128 Partners Comprehensive Three-Year Plan.” The Plan was developed and delivered to the 128 Partners (individuals who donated in a special fundraising campaign) in January 2020. The Plan states: “When the Board of Trustees voluntarily suspended its accreditation, the goal was to return the College to financial stability, continue its Mission, and provide state of the art programming on the Rensselaer campus.” What is happening on the Rensselaer campus is the realization of that promise of the College continuing its mission and providing state-of-the-art programming. A lot has been learned since 2017 and a lot has happened in the world of higher education. For example, the road back to accreditation is not as easy as turning a switch and resuming operations. It is a long and difficult process--as it should be. Saint Joseph's College is dedicated to returning accredited programs to the Rensselaer campus. While the focus continues to be on returning accredited programs to the campus, this cannot and should not be done without understanding and adapting to what has happened in higher education in the last eighteen months. The COVID pandemic is dramatically changing how higher education is offered and even whether some institutions can sustain themselves. Colleges have lost enrollment while the demographic for traditional students shrinks. In addition, there is a subtle focus from offering degrees per se to offering career-oriented programming. Liberal arts institutions are at the crossroads of what was and what will and can be. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for smaller institutions to survive and thrive on their own. As a result, there is a growing momentum among higher educational institutions to seek partnerships with like-minded and mission-linked institutions. By embracing and welcoming other institutions to its campus, Saint Joseph’s College can provide accredited programs right now. For the immediate term, it will be under these partner institutions' umbrella. In the future, it may establish a framework for our own accredited status. Saint Joseph's College is pleased to welcome three institutions to campus to offer college-level programming this fall: The University of St. Thomas, Calumet College of Saint Joseph, and Ivy Tech Community College. The University of Saint Thomas will be offering a two-year degree program in cybersecurity. Calumet College of Saint Joseph will be offering an introduction to business program for traditional students and a fast-track degree completion program for adults who have completed the associate degree. Ivy Tech Community College will begin offering general education classes including “Introduction to Interpersonal Communications,” “English Composition,” “Introduction to Teaching,” and “Quantitative Reasoning.” Building on the success of the last year and the promise of career-oriented education in the “128 Plan,” the College will continue offering its health care certification programs including American Red Cross(CPR), Billing and Coding, EKG, Certified Nursing Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant, and Phlebotomy. Students who have completed these programs have been very successful in attaining jobs in health care. Additional career certification programs are under development. Opening this fall in the Core Educational building and to support these new academic programs, Saint Joseph's College is creating the Academic, Business, and Mentoring Center. A key component in a traditional liberal arts education is a community of learners interacting with those of similar interests. Through the ravages of COVID, much “community” has been lost in the classroom with the onset of virtual learning. The College’s goal is to keep community in the classroom in this growing online world. To this end, the Center will be available for students taking online and traditional classes, guided by tutors, and will interact with business mentors who will introduce them to the world of work—including possible internships with local businesses. The Center will provide computers as well as facilitators to help students navigate the classwork, interact with fellow students, and network with potential employers. Looking to the future and responding to community needs, additional institutions will be invited to offer their programs on the Rensselaer campus. Saint Joseph College intends to offer state-of-the-art programs at affordable prices. What's going to happen this fall is a testament to the Phoenix beginning to rise. Saint Joseph's College looks forward to community support and partnership as we make this a state-of-the-art institution for the 21st century. As an alum said on a recent visit to the College, “we realize that our SJC is gone but it is encouraging that a re-envisioned 21st Century college will slowly emerge beginning with a few college-level classes this fall.”
