Pumas Eighth at GLVC Championship, Sanchez Makes SJC History
The Saint Jospeh's College men's cross country team finished eighth at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships on Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Naza Sanchez completed a record day with a school record and All-Conference honors.
The University of Southern Indiana repeated as the overall team champions by compiling 36 points, 29 more than runner-up Drury University. SJC totaled 184 points for eighth place, seven points behind the seventh place team Missouri Science and Technology and 27 points away from a top five finish.
Drury's Jamie Villa Zapatero won GLVC championship with a time of 25:00. Northern Kentucky's Drew Harris finished 10 seconds behind Zapatero to finish second.
The Pumas were lead by Naza Sanchez (Jr., Rensselaer, Ind./Rensselaer Central) who finished sixth individually with a SJC school record time 25:29. Sanchez breaks Jim Baker's 26-year-old record by 11 seconds, also collecting All-GLVC honors with the finish. Sanchez is the first male cross country runner ever to achieve All-Conference status in SJC history.
Corey Springs (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) finished 19th with a time of 26:11, eight seconds away from earning All-Conference honors. Brian Witt (Fr., Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was 39th with a time of 26:54.
Jay Skibbens (Sr., Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) finished 85th while Jack Laski (So., DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) was 98th. Rocco Mazzanti (Fr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond Burton) was 166th and Logan De Vos (Fr., Medaryville, Ind./West Central) finished 122nd.
