Overview
The Certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) program at Saint Joseph's College offers students the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to become a certified medical billing and coding specialist in the fast-paced, electronically-ran healthcare field. As part of earning their medical billing and coding certificate, students learn how to accurately assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and medical services as part of the insurance reimbursement process.
Many people find adding a medical billing and coding specialist certification to their list of professional credits beneficial. Medical billing and coding specialists work in a variety of places, including health clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and medical laboratories, or could even work from home through some facilities! A medical billing and coding specialist helps the healthcare facility manage insurance claims, invoices, and payments. The day-to-day work of a medical coding and billing specialist includes:
Properly coding services, procedures, diagnoses, and treatments.
Preparing and sending invoices or claims for payment.
Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to sit for their CBCS national certification exam. The certification is through the National Healthcareers Association (NHA).
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), medical billing and coding specialists earn an average annual salary of $40,350 and work in one of the fastest growing professions. The BLS also estimates that at least 37,100 new jobs will be needed in this profession by 2030.
