Mentors

Dr. Donnelly jumps during Lisa's demonstration.

Karen E. Donnelly, Professor of Mathematics
Dr. Donnelly teaches a variety of courses including Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Calculus III, Mathematics as a Human Pursuit, Probability, Topics, and Differential Equations.  Laboratory work using technology, including calculators, MATLAB(TM), and Maple(TM) for visualization, computation, and exploration is an important component in her courses.  She maintains web sites for her courses and uses the Internet for research, projects, students journals, and presentations.  Dr. Donnelly has participated in several faculty development workshops for activity-based mathematics and technology in the curriculum.

Philip F. Gilbert, CPPS, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Department Chair
P.F. Gilbert teaches the mathematics courses for elementary education and the methods courses for the teachings of mathematics in secondary schools.  His work also involves mathematics courses for the mathematics major: Numerical Analysis and Number Theory.  Modern technology forms a regular part of the student's work in his courses.

Marge McIlwain, Asst. Professor of Mathematics, Dean of Freshmen
Professor McIlwain has taught Calculus I and II for more than ten years at the College.  Students in both classes use graphing calculators extensively; students in Calculus II use the TI-92 Plus(TM) calculators throughout the course.  Calculus II students are assigned major applications projects in which they use data collected using the CBL(TM) (Calculator Based Laboratory) system and curve fitting using the TI-92 Plus.  Professor McIlwain has stayed abreast of the use of technology in mathematics through a variety of professional faculty development seminars.

Roger G. Olson, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Environmental Science
Dr. Olson has a B.S. in Geology and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics.  He has taught a wide variety of courses including Modern Algebra, Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Statistics, Environmental Geology, and Introduction to Environmental Studies.  In addition, he teaches and lectures in the science offerings of the College's Core Program.
