 Excerpts from the Grant Proposal

Summary

The Teaching Scholars will explore mathematics with middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) through hands-on activities.  These activities will have the participating students observe mathematical phenomena, analyze and mathematically model what they observe, and write about these results.

Statement of Project Objectives

(1)  Students will relate the mathematical concepts that they are studying in the classroom to real activites, developing an appreciation for the centrality of mathematics to the human exprience.

(2)  Group projects will develop students' collaborative learning styles and their ability to communicate mathematics with each other.

(3)  Students will develop their critical thinking skills and gain experience in the use of the scientific method.

(4)  Students will enhance their mathematical writing skills and have the satisfaction of seeing their work made available to a wide community of Internet users.

The scholars and mentors hold weekly meetings.
