OUTCOMES:
Students will be able to use methods of contemporary scholarship to read and interpret the Hebrew Scriptures.
Using this knowledge they will be able to relate this to a project for present or future ministry.
Students will have a basic knowledge of some of the historical events that shaped the Hebrew people and their scriptures.
Students will begin to understand ways in which the Hebrew Prophets are relevant for today.

TEXT
Lawrence Boadt Reading the Old Testament: An Introduction Paulist Press 1984
The Bible (preferably the New America translation)

Recommended for Reference: The Jerome Biblical Commentary
Additionally there are various commentaries on the Hebrew Scriptures, such as the Collegeville Commentaries and the Anchor Bible series are both good.

ASSIGNMENTS
Each student will be responsible for an exegesis, a paper on a figure from the historical books, a paper on one of the prophets and a practical application of a text from the Hebrew Scriptures, e.g., a reflection for a prayer service, a lesson on something in the Hebrew Scripture.
1. Exegesis (2-3 pages)
2. Figure from the Historical Books (3-4 pages)
3. A Prophet (3-4 pages)
4. A practical application of the Hebrew Scriptures (@ 5 pages) and presentation
