For
your presentations, also prepare a poster for your mathematician
-- include historical facts about the mathematician (including dates,
location) and major works, picture, and if possible something
visually appealing demonstrating one of his major mathematical
accomplishments. These will be also be displayed in the poster session
for the SJC Colloquium Day. Posters due on Thursday March
25th.
Possible Topics in Chronological Order for Presentations -- If you are interested in the works of some other mathematician during the time period (of significance) you may select that one (with approval). For the presentations, please set the historical context for the work of the mathematician, briefly discuss his life, his major mathematical accomplishments. Then focus on one (or more) of his/her most significant mathematical results. Include clear and detailed proof(s) and examples as appropriate. Make sure that the class has "done some mathematics" --the class learned something new or enhanced their understanding of an important mathematical concept. Have an appropriate mathematical exercise for the class as a follow-up assignment (short).
