CORE 2                 INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT THE FINAL EXAM             8 a.m. 4/28/2009

The final exam will consist of two parts, each of which will count equally.  In total the final exam will count 40% of your lecture/discussion grade.  (The rest of your grade will come 20% from EQs and 40% from the quizzes.)   The writing section grade will be computed differently.

Reminder:  The final exam will take place in our core building classroom at 8 a.m. Tuesday 4/28.

The two parts of the final exam are:

1)  An in-class exam at 8 a.m. Tuesday April 28 which will consist of questions from the semester’s quizzes.  This part will count half (50%) of the final exam grade.

2)  A 1-2 page TAKE HOME essay done in Times New Roman 12 point font single-spaced with 1-inch margins.  It will be DUE during final exam period, 8 a.m. Tuesday April 28.  It should be at least one page, but no more than two pages in the specified font.  This part will also count half (50%) of the final exam grade.

This essay is to satisfy the collegial agreement “Each of the faculty of Core 2 agrees to give a final exam that will include a comprehensive essay component.”

YOUR ESSAY MUST BE ON ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS.

·         One of the themes in Frankenstein is what it means to be human.  What do you think it means to be human?

·         Are the solutions (or answers) to this world’s questions (of whatever sort) to be found in the natural sciences? Are there any concerns or issues that are totally beyond the capability of human beings in general and science in particular?

·         What was the place of slavery as a cause of the American Civil War? That is, was the war fought precisely because of the slavery issue, or were there other causes involved, which were perhaps equally compelling?

·         In what ways, if any, should the workings of science and technology be restricted by government, religious leaders, or private individuals?

·         If you consider yourself a Christian, perhaps this would be a good question for you: How does your view of God and God’s involvement in this world correlate with (agree with or differ from) that of Galileo, Hobbes, Locke, Voltaire (in Candide), Shelley, Marx, Darwin, Kafka, and in the movie Jesus Camp?
