Cup O' Joe Traditions Journal

**Article 1**

The Traditions Journal was established by the March 23, 2005 General Meeting-- meriting approval and consent from the president and members in attendence. The Traditions Journal shall be an unofficial guide, over-riding in no way the authority of The Constitution, with the sole intent of recording the traditions and spirit of the coffee house. The Traditions Journal shall be a helpful guide to present and future generations of members and officers, and not a matter of rule.

The Traditions Journal shall be edited and amended over time by the current President and Emporer, whose position is described below.

**Article 2**

The Emporer position will be filled by no more than one person at a time, and need not be filled at all. However, it is beneficial for the position to be filled, for the reasons described below. The position of Emporer is an unofficial position, garnering no official power over the club. However, the purpose of the Emporer shall be an advisory position which should be viewed as a powerful role for the club. To be eligible for the position, a candidate must meet these requirements:

the candidate must be a former and not-active president,

the candidate must be a current member of the club,

and the candidate must attain approval from the active president and majority of members at a meeting.

**Article 3**

To the knowledge of FD, the club was founded by William Bell, first president of Cup O' Joe. An exact lineage following from Bill Bell is unknown. However, to some point, the respective presidents of the coffee house became this:

Ana Ostman

Jamie Pucka

Wendy (Sidener) Taylor

Angelina Quartuccio

Christopher Repp

Holly Herber

The ongoing mission of Cup O' Joe is to provide a cool place on campus for creativity, studying, recreation, and an overwhelming coffee house atmosphere. Cup O' Joe is part hippie, part beatnik, part cyberpunk, and part anything both artistic and intelligent. The mission is purposely made to be vague in the constitution to allow future generations to exercise their own styles and approaches. COJ serves Saint Joseph's College students, residents, and faculty alike. The services are free. The work is voluntary. By keeping COJ a nonprofit Student Association funded club, COJ is allowed total student control (under the guidance of a faculty advisor).

**Article 5**

The wall artwork, as determined by much discussion over the years, is a slow piece-by-piece conglomeration. No radical changes are made, such as whiting out large portions of the walls or completing painting everything over. The wall artwork helps to give COJ a rich feel of history and diversity.

**Article 6**

The philosophy of Cup O' Joe is in strict allignment with the teachings of the Catholic Church and takes a left when it comes to social issues. COJ has always been environmentally conscious, anti-corporate, pro-freedom of speech, charity-minded, etc.

**Article 7**

Though Cup O' Joe typically takes an anti-corporate stance, it is fundamentally a coffee house that recognizes the importance of quality coffee. Ergo, Starbucks brand coffee has been embraced. Good tasting drinks, custom drinks, and a unique COJ menu supports the coffee house's devotion to coffee.

**Article 8**

Cup O' Joe loves the guitar.

**Article 9**

Cup O' Joe also loves poetry. Impromptu readings, pass-around poetry, amassing original student works, and Measure readings are a core feature of COJ's support of original artwork.

**Article 10**

Cup O' Joe is a community driven by the needs and desires of its members. It is a social place that should never be controlled by an elite few. It is crucial that the member of the COJ member-base never decrease to a number equal to its officers. The coffee house is meant for Saint Joseph's College and not a small group of friends who wish to play Dungeons and Dragons.

**Article 11**

Though originally Cup O' Joe discrimated against the prescense of technology, that view has changed to meet the needs of its members. To meet the vast range of needs, technology is needed to be present. However, functions or themes that do not include technology(such as poetry readings) are strongly encouraged.

**Article 12**

Again, to meet the wide range of needs of the coffee house, theme nights have been implemented to make certain semester functions and better advertise to Saint Joseph's College the happenings of Cup O' Joe.

**Article 13**

Never ever relocate Cup O' Joe. The walls cannot be moved and if the administration determines that the club can no longer be located in its rightful place in the Chapel Basement, then the club must be disbanded.
