SJC Theatre

Theatre Arts

Our Theatre Arts major is designed to be a hands-on, production-oriented major. We believe the key to learning to be an actor, a director, designer, or technician is in the application of the theories and skills learned in the classroom. While text books, lectures, and theories are vital to the intellectual growth of a theatre artist, it is in production where a student‘s true worth is made manifest.

Why Theatre Arts?

  • 1 Communication skills are a big part of the Theatre Arts major and also happen to be the number one attribute employers look for in an employee. At SJC, you can jump right in to the hands-on, production oriented Theatre Arts program and begin to shape your communication skills from day one.
  • 2 According to the Kendall Hunt Publishing Company, an organization that provides quality education products and services, "Theatre is the only art form that involves all other art forms; music, painting, design, sculpting,1 creative writing, and dance."
  • 3 Studying Theatre Arts will help you become a better speaker and listener, not to mention help you to develop the skills that only a liberal arts student can have while preparing you for virtually any career you should choose.

Why Study Theatre Arts at Saint Joseph's College?

At SJC, we tailor each major to meet our students’ needs. Thus, our Theatre Arts program offers a comprehensive course of study in rhetoric, communication theory, and theatre. From the introductory courses to the capstone Senior Seminar course, the Theatre Arts program prepares students for the future.

Hands-on Experience

Theatre Arts is a hands-on, production-oriented major. In order to ensure that our students are prepared for careers in theatre after graduation, we provide Theatre Arts students with on-campus opportunities. Our acting troupe, the Columbian Players, is SJC’s oldest club on campus. The Columbian Players produce two full-length plays and a musical each year. Many students also participate in the SJC Improv Club, which organizes two main stage productions annually as well as makes other appearances throughout the year. Performance Scholarships of $2,000 are available in Theatre. Although we offer a Theatre Arts major, students from all disciplines are welcome to participate in theatre productions, and we encourage students to minor or double major in Theatre Arts.

Dedication to Excellence

The opportunity to develop and hone specific talents is combined with SJC’s nationally recognized, interdisciplinary Core Program to offer the budding artist access to a precious commodity - a world of ideas to draw from in the development as an artist.

Faculty and Class Size

Every Theatre Arts professor holds a master's degree in their field of expertise, in addition to having extensive experience from states all over the country. Class sizes range between 10 and 25 students.

"I like how the Core Program combines general education subjects, so SJC students don’t have to go through the individual classes all over again like in high school."

Explore the Core
  • Start Your Major Freshman Year

Like Elementary Education major Brittany Cooper ’12, you start your major as soon as you walk in the door, so you will have four years of knowledge and experience in your field. You can even change your mind about your major and still graduate on time with lots of experience.

Core and the major work in harmony to develop the cognitive skills requisite for success in a competitive, global society. Students better understand the forces that shape the future by exploring the past. They discuss contemporary events; analyze the impact of science on our understanding of humanity and the universe; and investigate diverse cultures and world civilizations.

  • Mentorship

Small colleges offer you personal attention; SJC professors, such as Communication Professors Fred and Sally Berger, do more for you—they serve as mentors. Studies show that having a mentor leads to success in your field. Alumni often tell us how their professors not only played a major role in their success, but also became lifelong friends.  If you are undecided about what to major in, we help you decide.

  • High Quality Academics

In the Core Program, you will be inspired to debate, analyze, and solve problems. Discussion of culture and society, the modern world, and Christian Humanism are just a few highlights of the Program. New perspectives will be gained, your worldview will expand, and you will graduate from SJC as a well rounded, highly marketable person.

  • Leadership

You get more deeply involved at SJC, so you get more meaningful experiences that prepare you for career and life. LaMichelle Sanders ’14, for example, has spent two summers helping Chinese study abroad students adapt to life in the U.S. and at SJC. If you want to start a club or activity that doesn’t exist, we encourage you to start one. At SJC, prepare yourself for what you want to do in life.

  • Real-life Skills

Because of the skills you develop by having the Core Program interact with your major for four years in addition to internships, job shadowing, and service learning, you get hands-on experience in preparation for your career or graduate school. Students Hanna Kane ’14, Emily Baird ’15, and Alyssa Guarnaccia ’14 collect food in the SJC hoophouse to be distributed on campus. You will also get four years of analytical, writing, and speaking skills that will serve you well for the rest of your life.
