Why did you choose SJC?
I chose SJC because of the personal atmosphere,
the Core Program, and the quality of the Education Program. However, I have
found a lot of other things at SJC that I never would have expected to find,
and I think there was something greater drawing me here that I was unaware
of at the time of my decision. As a student, what were you involved in?
I was involved in Student Union Board (SUB), Color Guard, Winter Guard, and
Campus Ministry, and am an Academic Scholar, Performance Scholar, and a member
of the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society. I also chaired the Covenant House
Candlelight Vigil for Homeless and At-risk Children< /span> and worked in the
Admissions Office as a Representative Assistant. I loved this job because I was
able to talk to prospective students about my love of Saint Joseph's College.
During the last three years at SJC, I worked in a summer school program in Fort
Wayne Community Schools as a Classroom Assistant in the enrichment program.
What are you doing now?
I teach kindergarten at Middlebury Elementary School in Middlebury, Indiana. How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
The Education Department did an excellent job preparing me for my career. I
worked in a classroom environment every one of my semesters at SJC, in grades
ranging from preschool to third. During my freshman year, when my Supervising
Teacher was away at a conference, I was the Teacher for the entire day. In my
education classes, we integrate book material with discussion about the
experiences we have had applying our concepts in the classroom. For example, in
my Parent Education class, I created weekly newsletters and parent surveys as
well as conducted follow-up interviews in order to learn about how to establish
good relationships with my students' parents.
