Success Stories
Name:
Renee (Simon) Ricke
Residence:
Osgood, Indiana
Graduation Year:
2002
Majors:
Biology-Chemistry
Why did you choose SJC?
I knew Saint Joseph's College was the college for
me from the first time I was on campus. Being from a small town and small
high school, Saint Joseph's College felt very much like home with its very
close-knit community of faculty and students, an environment that I was
familiar with and had excelled in. After talking to Father Stang and seeing
the Microbiology/Anatomy lab, I felt that the Biology-Chemistry Program
here was very strong. I also really liked the idea of the Core Program,
which allows students to find their place in the world, explore different
cultures and ways of thought, and develop skills in communication, writing,
and teamwork that will be useful in any profession. As a student, what were you involved in?
I was involved with various activities throughout
my years here, including the Student Union Board (SUB), Habitat for Humanity,
Science Club, Science Olympiad, Music Ministry, and Seeking Mental Awareness
and Staying Healthy (SMASHed). I am also the recipient of the "Realizing
the Dream" Award, which is given to a first-generation college student for
excelling in my first year of studies. I was a Resident Assistant for Justin
Hall, where I was able to interact with and mentor the students living on
my floor on a very personal level, and I knew they depended on me and look
to me for support. It was a very rewarding job, and I believe it is one
of the most important jobs on campus. I also interned for the Office of
Admissions, where I supervised telecounselors, scheduled student workers
to assist with Discover Days (information fairs held on campus), helped
plan overnight visits for admitted students, and both trained and evaluated
SJC tour guides. I enjoyed working in the Office of Admissions because I
was able share what I love about Saint Joseph's College with others. What are you doing now?
I am an Associate Analytical Chemist for Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, Indiana.
How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
The Biology and Chemistry faculty helped me immensely
by giving practical experience inside and outside the classroom through
work as a lab assistant, information and connections to internships in addition
to the Career Center, and developing important lab skills within the class/lab
setting. Through my work in the Admissions Office and as a Resident Assistant,
I developed skills of professionalism, communication, and problem solving.
