Success Stories
Name:
Donald Shuler
Residence:
Lansing, Michigan
Graduation Year:
2003
Majors:
History and Philosophy
Why did you choose SJC?
I liked the idea of the Core Program. I liked being
able to start on my majors as a freshman and the idea of an integrated and
communal aspect to education. I also like that most of my classes are under
twenty people and I have some of my professors as friends. As a student, what were you involved in?
I was a member of the Freshman Leader Program, Alpha
Lambda Delta honor society, Delta Epsilon Sigma national scholastic honor
society, and Phi Alpha Theta International Honor Society in History. I was
the Student Association President for 2002 and was involved with SJC student
government for two years. This prepared me for my career as an Attorney
because I learned how to give and take in a political bargaining process.
I also learned how to compromise without losing sight of the original intent
of a proposed action. During my senior year, I was Captain of the College's
Mock Trial team and received awards for my "performance" as an Attorney.
I feel as if I have a head start in my career because I already know and
have experience with courtroom decorum and how to present testimony and
evidence in a court of law. At SJC, I received the William Downard Prize
in History for excellence in the study of history and the Donald Brinley
Prize in Philosophy for exceptional philosophical writing. What are you doing now?
I am attending law school at Valparaiso University,
where I was accepted into their Honors Program. After graduating from law
school, I plan to practice law somewhere, settle down, and start a family.
How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
SJC gave me multiple opportunities to work with
people in real situations and with real problems. More importantly, I learned
from my professors and certain administrative officials how be a "professional."
