Why did you choose SJC?
I had attended a Catholic grammar school and high
school, and it was important to me to continue in that tradition. The College
also had a good reputation among the teachers at my high school.
As a student, what were you involved in?
A great deal of my time was spent studying for my classes,
but I also found time for clubs and activities. I participated in intramural
sports, student government, and I belonged to the English Club. I also wrote
for Measure (the College's student-produced literary magazine) and Stuff
(the campus newspaper currently known as The Observer). It was a great time.
What are you doing now?
I received my doctorate in English from Indiana University in 1980
and am now the Director of Public Service and The Fund Raising School and an Assistant
Professor of Philanthropic Studies for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
The Center aims to increase the understanding of philanthropy through programs in
research, teaching, public service, and public affairs. It also offers continuing
education credits throughout the United States and in over 40 different countries for
professionals looking to expand their fundraising knowledge.
I sit on a number of boards and committees, including the Indiana Youth Institute and Corporations and Foundations Division of The Campaign for Saint Meinrad. I'm also the Editor-in-Chief of the Excellence in Fundraising Workbook Series and author of the workbook Developing Your Case For Support. How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
I was confident that I received a good education, but more importantly, I grew to be a
lover of learning. I became curious, inquisitive; I learned how to ask questions and
apply my knowledge to whatever field I was in. SJC also taught me about the meaning of
community. When I was a student, my friends and I saw that the College was known as
a "community of scholars," and we didn't understand what it meant - we certainly didn't
see ourselves as scholars. Today, I see how dedicated the faculty and staff are to this
College, how much they love it and how much time they invest in it, and I know.
