Why did you choose SJC?
Saint Joseph's College provides a personal education
and integrates world cultures and issues into your individual major and
career goals. I have received hands-on training in my selected field as
well as an integrative education from other disciplines. As a student, what were you involved in?
I was an Academic Scholar, a member of the Alpha
Lambda Delta freshman honor society and Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic
Honor Society, and was named to the Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference
team for women's golf for the past two years. During the summer of 2002,
I interned at the Indianapolis Zoo, where my job duties included checking
the animals for abnormal behavior or appearances, preparing diets, maintaining
animal exhibits, and holding discussions with the public about the animals.
I learned how to better communicate with the general public through those
talks and a tremendous amount about animal behavior and enrichment from
the keepers. I have volunteered at the Columbian Park Zoo in Lafayette and
Jasper County Humane Society, and I've also worked as a Youth Director at
First Christian Church in Rensselaer. What are you doing now?
I am attending Purdue University's Veterinary School and am investigating
careers in animal behavior research. How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
SJC's Career Center staff was a huge help to me.
They prepared me for interviewing, helped with my resumes, and taught me
to be persistent in applying for jobs and school programs. My major has
certainly prepared me well by providing me with a basic knowledge of the
field and showing me how to communicate with my peers and professionals.
Overall, Saint Joseph's College truly promotes a personalized education.
