Why did you choose SJC?
I attended a Catholic high school, and I needed to find a college environment where the values I developed there would still be important. I felt SJC focused on more what a student was supposed to get out of an education and less on merely emphasizing a selection of majors. It seemed to provide students with a tradition-rich, smaller setting where individual development was just as important, if not more important than, academics.
As a student, what were you involved in?
I was a member of both the Marching and Pep Bands, Choir, Psychology Club, Courier Club (now known as Student Ambassadors), and Columbian Players (SJC's theatre organization). I served my resident hall as a Resident Assistant for one semester and was elected as a Congress Organizational Senator during senior year, as well as worked in the College's Carpenter Shop.
What are you doing now?
I am employed as Senior Editor for The Rough Notes Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, a company that produces educational and reference materials for the property and casualty insurance industry, including the nationally-known Rough Notes Magazine. I belong to the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters, Research Committee for Central Indiana, and National Diversity Taskforce. I also serve on the board of directors and chair two committees for Cardinal Ritter High School, where my two oldest children attend school, and volunteer every year at the College's annual Homecoming celebration.
How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
I think the lasting effect of my SJC education is appreciation for the importance of other persons and respecting their positions and opinions. A Catholic college offers young people an environment where they are not expected to put aside their beliefs in order to gain intellectual maturity. Faith and learning are not mutually exclusive; they grow alongside each other. SJC implanted the seed of seeking meaning outside of myself, moving from self-centeredness to serving others. That's a lesson that is never forgotten and is never over.
