Success StoriesName:
Jill (O'Neil) Henady
Residence:
Rensselaer, Indiana
Graduation Year:
December 1984
Majors:
Mathematics-Computer Science and Secondary Education
Why did you choose SJC?
I wanted to attend a smaller school, and Saint Joseph's
College interested me because of the amount of individual attention it gives
to its students, and the campus's atmosphere allowed professors and students
to really get to know each other. I thought attending SJC would be a good
character-building opportunity for me. As a student, what were you involved in?
I participated in the intramural sports program
for softball and volleyball, was Junior Class Treasurer, and a member of
the Education Club. Becoming involved with clubs and activities at SJC was
a great way to meet and socialize with other students who had interests
similar to my own. What are you doing now?
I teach Advanced Mathematics and serve as the Chair
of the Mathematics Department at Rensselaer Central High School (RCHS) in
Rensselaer, Indiana. As a teacher, I have been able to continue my relationship
with Saint Joseph's College in a variety of ways. I've trained several student
teachers and practicum students from SJC's Education Department, and I've
also worked with students through the Teaching Scholars Program and mentored
them as they prepared math and science experiments for the students in my
classroom. The experiments they did helped my students to make connections
between the math they study in the classroom and the math that is used in
life after high school. In addition to teaching, I am a track coach for RCHS, and I serve on the Indiana Textbook Advisory Board for Glencoe Publishing. I am also a member of Rensselaer's Psi Iota Xi sorority, a philanthropic organization that promotes activities and scholarships relating to speech and hearing, art, literature, and music. I've been involved with the sorority since 1981 and have held the positions of President, Vice President, and Treasurer. It makes me feel wonderful to help those who need my help without expecting anything in return. How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
Saint Joseph's College taught me a lot in the areas
of mathematics, computer programming, and education, but my learning didn't
stop there. The Core Program helped me to develop a much broader base of
knowledge and integrate that knowledge into the topics I was studying in
my majors. Core also taught me how to think, read, and write in both critical
and creative ways, and I use those skills when interacting with the students,
parents, administrators, and colleagues I encounter every day.
