Why did you choose SJC?
When I began my college search, I told my guidance counselor
that I was interested in small Catholic colleges, and she introduced me to SJC.
I found myself intrigued by the Core Program and surprised and touched by the warm
welcome and personal attention I received from everyone I talked to in Admissions
and otherwise. When I visited campus during the Presidential Scholarship competition,
I fell in love with the close-knit, family-like atmosphere and immediately felt at
home. By that point, I had made up my mind: SJC was where I wanted to be for my
undergraduate studies. However, money was a concern for my family and me. After
being awarded a Presidential Scholarship, attending SJC became a reality and I made
the final decision that this was where I wanted and needed to be.
As a student, what were you involved in?
I was a staff member of the College's Writing Clinic for three
and a half years and a tutor for the English Department and Core Program for three
years. I was a reporter for The Observer, the College's newspaper, for three years,
serving as the Co-Editor-in-Chief during my senior year. I was involved with Measure,
the College's creative arts society and publication by the same name, throughout my
time at SJC, serving as Editor-in-Chief during my senior year. I was a Freshman Leader
and active in Volunteer Corps and Music Ministry. I worked as a Student Ambassador
and Representative Assistant for the Office of Admissions as well as an intern in the
Office of Publications and Media Relations. I was a member of the national honor
societies Alpha Lambda Delta and Delta Epsilon Sigma, and belonged to the Indiana
Student Teacher Association in addition to my involvement with the Mock Trial team.
What are you doing now?
Although I began my time at SJC believing I was going to pursue
a career in education, through my interaction with professors from the Political Science
Department, Core classes, and my involvement in Mock Trial, I realized that law school
and ultimately pursuing a career in a combination of media, entertainment, and copyright
law is what I truly want to do. This career will unite my passion for literature, arts,
and media, as well as my interest in law and the legal system. I'm currently working
towards my Juris Doctorate at Indiana University School of Law.
How has SJC helped you with your future goals?
I never would have realized my interest in law without the Core
Program; through my Core classes, I encountered professors and material that not only
exposed me to disciplines outside my major, but also how the various academic disciplines
are united. Also, at other schools, the summer before one's senior year may be too late
to make the decision to attend law school. Because of the relationships I had been able
to establish with my professors, however, I was able to contact Peter Watkins, Associate
Professor of Political Science and Pre-Law Advisor, during the summer for advice. Once I
returned to campus in the fall, he helped me train for the LSAT and provided me with a
network of SJC alumni currently enrolled in law schools. Thanks to SJC, I was able to
utilize my major in a way I had not originally anticipated when I first declared my major.
