Why did you choose SJC?
Saint Joseph's College did a good job searching me out. The Band Director heard me play at a band competition in high school, and before I had even applied, the College had offered me a scholarship. Once I visited the campus, I felt really comfortable there. I also found SJC had an excellent Accounting program, which was what I was interested in at the time, and I liked the idea of starting in my major right away. Ironically, after two years of studying Accounting, I decided I wasn't interested in it and switched my major to Computer Science. Even after switching my major, I was still able to graduate in four years.

As a student, what were you involved in?
I played the trumpet in the band for four years, and I was heavily involved in the Annual Little 500 go-kart race. During my first year, I was a member of the pit crew for one of the drivers, and I drove in the race for my last three years. Senior year, I also served as Chairman of the race, which included managing a large budget and organizing the race, and worked as a Student Systems Administrator for the College. I also participated in an internship with the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System in Indianapolis, Indiana, during the summer after my junior year. I was part of the informational services group, and I was involved with Web site development and several different projects for the company.

What are you doing now?
I'm a Chief Network Engineer for Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, Indiana. I'm involved with long-term planning for IU's data network, and I perform network-engineering services for several national and international research and education networks. I'm also active in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which is the standards organization for the Internet, and I teach classes around the country on Multicast, a technology that enables the large-scale distribution of audio and video online. Before coming to IU, I was a Senior Engineer for America On-Line (AOL) and UUNET, one of the world's largest Internet service providers.

How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
At Saint Joseph's College, I received a broad base of knowledge in my major and also developed solid oral and written communication skills. I work in a very technical field where many people have strong technical skills, but they don't always have good communication skills. In the Core Program, I wrote dozens of papers and did a large amount of reading in areas outside of my major. I work with people who attended larger universities and don't have that experience.
