Success StoriesName:
Andrew M. Evens, DO, MS
Residence:
Oak Park, Illinois
Graduation Year:
1991
Major:
Biology-Chemistry
Why did you choose SJC?
I chose SJC due to the very well-rounded
curriculum that the institution offered. Also, the lower
teacher-to-student ratio was a very attractive feature, allowing
frequent "hands on" teaching and close student and teacher
interactions. As a student, what were you involved in?
NCAA varsity basketball was my primary
extracurricular activity. What are you doing now?
I am a physician, specifically a
Hematologist/Oncologist in academics at the Northwestern
University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
My primary specialties are non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's
disease, and sarcoma (soft tissue and bone) at the Robert H.
Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.
In addition to patient care, I am involved with teaching,
clinical, and translational research -- studying pathways
of cancer resistance and discovering new therapies for
patients with lymphoma and sarcoma. How did SJC prepare you for the "real world"?
SJC provided a very well-rounded education.
Not only was I well prepared with the pre-medical courses and
curriculum, but the arts and humanities through reading and writing
have allowed me to become a well-rounded physician. Rev.
William Stang, C.PP.S. '72 was very influential as a role
model. In addition to being a priest, he is also a medical doctor
and serves as a Chaplain (Lt. Col.) in the U.S. Army. He was a great
teacher and influenced my decision to pursue a medical career. His
Biology-Chemistry class (which had eight students to one teacher) is
a perfect example of the close interactions that SJC allowed. We
were able to pick his mind on almost a daily basis on the topic at
hand or any other medical topic.
