Student Financial Services

Meet the Staff

Deb Sizemore
Director of Student Financial Services

Deb Sizemore, Director of Student Financial Services, began her working relationship with SJC in Computing Services in 1984; in 1988, that relationship changed to embrace her new alumni status when she graduated with a Computer Science degree. She relocated to the Business Office that same year and came into her current position ten years later. “I love working with students,” Deb said. “The energy they have is contagious, and they never fail to teach me something new.”

Born in Winamac, Indiana, Deb graduated from West Central High School and married her senior prom date, Jeff; they have two sons, Derek and Alex. She belongs to Trinity United Methodist Church and is also a Fellow of SJC. Her hobbies include reading, scrap booking, and polishing her photography skills.

Cheryl Torbet
Assistant Director of Student Financial Services

Cheryl Torbet came to Saint Joseph’s College in 1989 as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Admissions, previously working in the banking industry for five years. In 1997, she relocated to the Office of Student Financial Services (formerly known as the Business Office) as Assistant Director of Student Financial Services and continues to enjoy her service in that area. “I love this position because it allows plenty of interaction with students on campus,” she said. “I enjoy the lasting relationships I’ve been able to keep with many of them.”

Cheryl attended Indiana State University and has American Institute of Banking certifications. Originally from Goodland, Indiana, she lives in Rensselaer with her husband Steve, and son, Logan. She also has a son, Matt, who lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with his wife, and a daughter, Lindsey, who is in Pharmacy School at Purdue University. Cheryl serves on the Board of Directors for the Fendig Summer Theater, a local children’s acting troupe, and co-owns Gatherings, LLC, a social décor rental and event planning business.

Becky Shide
Financial Aid Specialist

Becky Shide, Financial Aid Specialist at SJC, moved to Rensselaer from Fowler, Indiana, in the third grade and currently resides here with her husband (also her high school sweetheart). She is also the proud mother of two children.

Becky came to SJC in 1991 as the Financial Aid Secretary and was promoted in 1996 to her current position. In addition to her duties at the College, she’s also taken several courses at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute. “I enjoy working with students and their parents. Being the parent of two college graduates, I understand that higher education is expensive,” she explained. “When students cross the stage during Commencement, I feel like I played a small part in helping them to achieve their diplomas.”

Kendra Hesson
Student Financial Services Secretary

Kendra Hesson came to Saint Joseph’s College in 2000, but she’s lived in Rensselaer all of her life. After high school, she earned an associate’s degree from Indiana Business College in Lafayette, was married, and spent four years working for a criminal defense attorney in Monticello before finding SJC. In her free time, Kendra enjoys taking long walks around campus and watching courtroom and forensic science dramas.

“SJC is a fun place to work, and I like helping students find a way to finance their education,” she said. “When families compliment you about how helpful you’ve been throughout the financial aid process, it’s a good feeling."

Ruth Swan
Student Financial Services Cashier

Ruth Swan came to SJC as the Student Financial Services Cashier in 2005, but her relationship with the College began long before that. With a son and daughter who graduated from SJC in 1995 and 2002, respectively, and another son who is working to complete a Criminal Justice degree, Ruth has been a proud Puma parent for many years.

As the Student Financial Services Cashier, Ruth sees plenty of student interaction. "My favorite part of the job is getting to help students with their payments and paychecks," she said. "You can't have that kind of personal interaction at other places, and it's what makes SJC special."

Having formerly worked in the real estate, banking, savings, and loan fields, Ruth currently splits her time between SJC and Rensselaer Middle School, where she is a part-time secretary. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and watching her three grandchildren grow up. Ruth and her husband live near Fair Oaks, Indiana, with their son
