Junior Colby Alexis has received a James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The scholarships are awarded to members of Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) Honor Society who are pursuing a for-credit study abroad program during the coming academic year. Alexis, a Port Huron, Mich. native and Political Science major, will study at Leuphana University in Lneburg, Germany this summer.
For the 2012 competition, the national selection committee reviewed more than 50 strong applicants, submitted by more than 20 local chapters. In this third year of the award's existence, the Society awarded fifteen $1,000 scholarships to students who will study abroad as far away as India and Norway.
"Saint Joseph's College's goal is to educate the whole person," said Colby Alexis. "Throughout my study abroad experience in Germany, I hope to learn more about the culture, people, language, and government in order to better inform my understanding of other cultures and my own. Studying abroad is an opportunity that should never be passed."
The awards are named in honor of Dr. James G. Stemler, who served the National Council of ALD for more than 14 years. In addition to his dedicated service on the Council, Dr. Stemler was an active chapter advisor at the University of Portland in Portland, Ore., and has been a proponent and promoter of international study.
