The Saint Joseph’s College Jazz Band will perform its annual Fall Jazz Band Concert on Sunday, November 10 at 2:00 pm CST in the Evans Arts and Science Building Theatre. The concert precedes the SJC Choirs’ Italy Tour Kickoff Concert, which begins at 4:00 pm CST in the Saint Joseph’s Chapel. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
This year’s concert is unique in that two professors will contribute to the performance. Band Director and Associate Professor of Music Robb Thiel will play drums, and Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. David Dixon will have his arrangement of Erik Satie’s “Gymnopédie,” which he has titled “Erik the Blue,” performed by the group. The Jazz Band has worked diligently on the piece since last year, and Dixon has been able to mold and shape it accordingly.
The concert will feature diverse styles of jazz, from ballads and samba to Herbie Hancock and Dixieland. Pieces to be performed include “Down by the Riverside,” “On Broadway,” and “My Funny Valentine,” along with a few surprises for the audience.
Two spectacular jazz saxophonists will be featured in the concert: freshman Erich Davies of Shelbyville, Ind., and senior Colby Alexis of Port Huron, Mich.
“Both of these students will perform jazz solos that will astound the crowd,” said Jazz Band Director and Associate Professor of Music Dr. Paul Geraci.
