Author and Sociologist Dr. Adia Harvey Wingfield to Speak at SJC's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Program
Rensselaer, Ind. - On January 16, 2012, Saint Joseph's College and surrounding communities will pay homage to Martin Luther King, Jr. and recall his indelible impression on American history. All are welcome to attend the event, and admission is free.
Dr. Adia Harvey Wingfield, Professor of Sociology at Georgia State University, will be the guest speaker at this year's event. Wingfield is the author of "Yes We Can?: White Racial Framing and the 2008 Presidential Campaign" and "Doing Business With Beauty: Black Women, Hair Salons, and the Racial Enclave Economy."
The program will kick off at 1:15 pm CST with the participants being bused from the Rev. Charles Banet, C.PP.S. Core Education Center on the SJC campus to the Jasper County Courthouse. At 1:30, the annual Diversity March from the Courthouse back to SJC will begin, ending at the Rev. Charles Banet, C.PP.S. Core Education Center. Wingfield's speech will begin at 2:00 in the Shen Auditorium. There will also be a musical performance by Roland Gresham, a Gospel Jazz guitarist from Athens, Ala. Those in attendance will have a chance to win a Kindle Fire.
Monetary prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest, for which entries were solicited in early December from area elementary and high schools as well as SJC. Two SJC community members will also be recognized as the ninth and tenth Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Honorees, individuals whose service to the College reflects the values exemplified by King. Past honorees include: Associate Dean of Students for Safety and Security Ernest Watson '82; SJC employee Jeanie Bushman; Head Librarian Cathy Salyers; Professor of Philosophy John Nichols; Associate Professor of Communication Fred Berger; Associate Professor of Philosophy Br. Rob Reuter, C.PP.S.; and Sodexo employees Jeannette Randolph and Alice McKay.
