Saint Joseph's College Bands Usher in Spring with Concert
On Sunday, April 1, the Saint Joseph's College Band will perform its annual spring band concert. The concert will be held in the Halleck Student Center Ballroom on the SJC campus at 2:00 pm CDT.
The National Association for Music Education's SJC chapter is requesting a non-perishable food item be brought to the concert for admission. Food donations will be given to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Rensselaer.
This year's concert will feature performances by the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Seniors will be recognized and awards presented, including the Gregory Kuhlavik Freshman Band Award and the Adam P. Lesinsky Senior Band Award.
Adam Lesinsky was the Director of College Bands at SJC from 1957 until he retired in 1966. Upon his retirement, Lesinsky left his entire musical library - more than 1,000 arrangements - to the College. Bohumir Kryl was one of the greatest cornet soloists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Adam Lesinsky was one of his students and eventually became a member of Kryl's band.
Senior Music major Ethan Avina of Lyons, Ohio will conduct a piece with the Symphonic Band. The Symphonic Band will feature movie themes from "Saving Private Ryan" and various Pixar movies as well as the theme from "World of Warcraft."
The Wind Ensemble will feature music from the Adam P. Lesinsky Library as well as the Bohumir Kryl Library. One selection, "Three Dances for Henry VIII," from the Kryl Library, was written in 1892. "Amparita Roca," from the Lesinsky Library, was composed in the early 1900s.
