Great Lakes Valley Conference to Add Football in 2012
The Great Lakes Valley Conference will add football as their 18th championship sport in the fall of 2012 the league announced on Tuesday. The GLVC Council of Presidents has already approved the timeline as the league moves forward with the planning of the inaugural season.
With the addition of William Jewell College as the GLVC's 16th member institution, there are now six football-playing schools in the Conference, the minimum number of institutions needed to sponsor a sport in the GLVC.
Saint Joseph's College is joined by Kentucky Wesleyan, Missouri Science and Technology and new GLVC member William Jewell,. Quincy will move football out of the NAIA in 2012 and the University of Indianapolis football program will leave the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference the same year.
It is anticipated that the 2012 schedule will be adopted at the 2010 GLVC Spring Meeting to be held in St. Louis on May 24-26. The Conference will also be exploring additional football-playing institutions that would serve as associate members of the GLVC.
"Being associated with the GLVC in the future will bring a new level of consistency to the league, said head football coach Lou Esposito. "We have always wanted to re-establish certain match-ups and the GLVC helps bring back some of our former rivals."
