SJC Secures GLVC Tourney Birth with Victory over Saints
The Saint Joseph's College volleyball team defeated Maryville University 3-0 at Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse on Friday to conclude the regular season. The victory coupled with a Bellarmine loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis put SJC into the Great Lakes Valley Tournament for the first time since the 2004 season.
The Pumas (13-18, 7-7 GLVC) controlled the entire match as they took the opening two game 25-15 and 25-14 to take a 2-0 advantage into the break. SJC saved the best game for last as they hit .361 in the frame to down the Saints (4-23, 1-12 GLVC) 25-18. The Pumas produced a clean performance as they only committed nine attacking errors on the night.
Sharon Freund (So., McHenry, Ill./Johnsburg led the team offensively with 10 kills. Erin Brocker (So., Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) put together an all around performance with eight kills, 31 assists and only one attacking error. Lindsey House (Sr., Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) finished with 33 digs on the night.
The Pumas will await the completion of the regular season to determine the site of the Conference Championship Tournament. SJC has clinched the eighth spot and will play the number one seed on Friday November 13th at 7:30 p.m. Currently Lewis University holds the top spot in the standings by one game over the University of Indianapolis.
