SJC Choirs to Perform Concert
RENSSELAER, Ind. – The Saint Joseph's College Chamber Singers and Concert Choir will perform on Sunday, November 15th at 4:00 CST in the Ballroom in Halleck Center on the SJC Campus. Admission to the concert is free.
The Chamber Singers will open the concert with three Romantic English works from various composers, including Edward Elgar. The group will perform unaccompanied for the pieces.
Following the Chamber Singers, the Concert Choir will perform Carl Orff's epic cantata "Carmina Burana" in its entirety. The piece, which is composed of several smaller pieces, is based on a medieval poem collection.
"Carmina Burana" was performed at Saint Joseph's six years ago in conjunction with the Ball State Orchestra. For this performance, the Choir will be performing the work with two pianists and a percussion section, as Orff intended for colleges to perform the piece when he composed it in 1936.
"There are a number of soloists featured in the concert," said Dr. Todd Samra, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of both groups. "Our students are doing a great job with the pieces. It should be a spirited concert."
Samra said that he hopes that people will come not only for the cultural value of being exposed to new works, but for the entertainment value in the selections.
"These works are tremendous and very recognizable," said Samra. "They're all really easy to listen to and should be a lot of fun for the audience."
Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by the Princeton Review, is a four-year, Catholic, liberal arts college offering 75 major, minor and pre-professional programs. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Ind., approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of over 1,000 students.
