SJC Students Thankful to Community for Generosity
RENSSELAER, Ind. – Students from Saint Joseph's College who went Trick-or-Treating for the Hungry on Halloween are celebrating a record-breaking year. SJC seniors Lisa Wilkins and Rich Mayer, who co-organized the event, said that the project had its largest turnout and received its largest amount of donations, with over 1500 items. The items were sent to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Rensselaer.
"We would like to send out a big thank you to the community," said Mayer. "We're grateful and so appreciative of the generosity they showed this year."
Students started Halloween festivities on Friday, as they went to the Rensselaer Care Center and passed out candy to residents. Then, on Saturday, students and faculty members met at the Gaspar Center on SJC's campus to begin going door-to-door.
Aside from what they received from going to Rensselaer homes, the group also received materials and donations from Save-a-Lot and County Market. Overall, Wilkins and Mayer hope that the group and community can continue the growth in generosity next year.
"It was great to see people who are from out of town and out of state get together for the community," said Mayer. "I think it really followed through on the core mission of Saint Joseph's College."
Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by the Princeton Review, is a four-year, Catholic, liberal arts college offering 75 major, minor and pre-professional programs. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Ind., approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of over 1,000 students.
