SJC Students Perform in Fall Jazz Concert
RENSSELAER, Ind. – The Saint Joseph's College Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Band will be performing in a Fall Jazz Concert on Sunday, November 1st, at 4:00 p.m. CST. The concert will take place in the Theatre in the Evans Arts and Science Building. Admission to the concert is free.
Dr. Todd Samra, director of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, said that the concert, which is new to this year's schedule, is similar to the concert held every spring. "The students are so talented that we want to get more out of them," said Samra. "They aren't doing as much as they could as far as performing."
To alleviate the problem, Samra talked with Dr. Paul Geraci, director of the SJC Jazz Band, about doing a joint show in the fall. Samra said that the concert aims to expose multiple generations to popular jazz standards.
"It should be a very entertaining show," said Samra. "Dr. Geraci and I always strive to pick solid, good, jazz selections that people will know. Younger people aren't necessarily exposed to jazz, so it's good to hear the classics." Songs scheduled to be featured in the concert include "Take the A-Train" and "Misty."
Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by the Princeton Review, is a four-year, Catholic, liberal arts college offering 75 major, minor and pre-professional programs. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Ind., approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of over 1,000 students.
