SJC Students Go Trick-or-Treating for the Hungry
RENSSELAER, Ind. – It all started out as a service project requirement. But, soon after they started, SJC students Lisa Wilkins '10 and Rich Mayer '10 became inspired by the Trick-or-Treating for the Hungry program.
"I wish we had done it sooner," said Wilkins, who is co-chairing the project with Mayer. "We both wish we had done it sooner. There's such a need in the community for it, that I'm just glad we can be a part of it now."
This Halloween, Wilkins and Mayer will be leading over 100 volunteers in going door-to-door asking for canned goods and non-perishable items. The items will eventually be taken to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry. Even though the program, which has been going on for the past few years, has its largest number of volunteers, those who would like to help are still welcome.
Volunteers can come to the Gaspar Center, located in the Saint Joseph's Chapel on the campus of Saint Joseph's College, from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. CDT on Saturday, October 31st. Trick-or-treating will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you'd still like to help, but can't be present, the most important thing you can do is have canned goods and non-perishable items ready when students show up. "We know times are hard," said Mayer, "We're just hoping people can help any way they can."
If you would like to donate, but aren't going to be home, you can leave a bag of items near your door with a note and students will pick it up. Also, you can call Mayer at (219) 866-5188 and volunteers will pick it up for you. Finally, donations can be made at the Gaspar Center, with checks being made out to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry.
