Pumas Honored by Collegiate Baseball
Two members of the Saint Joseph's College baseball team were honored as selections to the Midwest region Collegiate Baseball pre-season All-American Team early this month.
Starting right-handed pitcher Chase Sonen (RSr., Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and relief pitcher Clay Tingley (Sr., Edon, Ohio/Edon) made the prestigious list complied by the American Baseball Coaches Association's NCAA division II All-American Baseball Committee.
Sonen, who finished the season with an ERA of 3.57, led the team with nine wins and 80.2 innings pitched. Tingley made 20 appearances for the Pumas last season posting a 3-2 record.
Catcher Mike Pericht (Jr., Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) was also mentioned as a player to watch this season. Pericht boasted an average of .299 last season with a team high 10 home runs and 60 RBIs. He is the top returning player with 118 total bases, 45 runs, and 20 doubles.
Making the list of top newcomers was Joe Messina (Jr., New Lenox, Ill./South Suburban) who batted .401 for South Suburban College last year. He led the team with 75 RBIs and was second on the team in hits and doubles.
The Pumas were 46-18 last season, winning the Great Lakes Valley east division before having their season ended by Ashland University in the regional finals.
The Pumas will open the season with a double header on Valentine's Day in Memphis, Tennessee against Christian Brother University. First pitch is schedule for 12 p.m. CST.
