Father Ambrose J. Heiman, Former SJC Professor of Philosophy, Dies at 83
Rensselaer, IN--Father Ambrose Heiman, C.PP.S., former professor of philosophy at Saint Joseph's College, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 3. Fr. Ambrose was a distinguished professor with a teaching career that spanned nearly fifty years. Local residents will remember him assisting in the celebration of Sunday Mass at Saint Augustine Catholic Church. He had retired in January of 1995 and was living at Saint Charles Center, in Carthagena, Ohio. He was 83 at the time of his death.
Born in Decatur, Indiana, he entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood at Burkettsville, Ohio on September 10, 1929 and was ordained eleven years later on September 8, 1940. He earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from Saint Michael College of the University of Toronto. He was also awarded a S.T.L. degree in theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Father Heiman began his career as an associate pastor at Saint George Church in Paterson, New Jersey. He then served as a professor at Saint Joseph's College from 1942-43; a professor at Saint Charles Seminary in Carthegena, Ohio from 1943-69; and then returned to Saint Joseph's until his retirement. While at Saint Charles Seminary he also served as Vice Rector (1953-1965), Director of Brothers (1959-1964), and Rector (1965-1969).
He was preceded in death by his father John E. Heiman, his mother Mary Heiman, and his brothers Richard and Edward Heiman. He is survived by a brother, Rev. Lawrence Heiman of Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana; a sister Mrs. Irene Hamrick of Decatur, Indiana; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Visitors may call at Saint Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, March 4 and from 9:00 a.m. until the Funeral Mass on Friday. Fr. Lawrence Heiman, C.PP.S., brother of the deceased, will conduct a vigil service at 8 p.m. Thursday evening and preside at the Liturgy of Resurrection on Friday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. (EST).
