Avery Cardinal Dulles to Address SJC's 2003 Graduating Class

Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., will address the graduating seniors of Saint Joseph's College at the College's 108th annual commencement ceremony which takes place on Sunday, May 11th, in the Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse at 1:00 p.m. CDT.
Cardinal Dulles is the first American-born theologian who does not hold the office of Bishop to be created a Cardinal for the Catholic church. An internationally recognized theological author and lecturer, he has penned 22 books, among them Models of the Church, The New World of Faith, and Newman (his latest publication), and more than seven hundred articles on theological subjects. Cardinal Dulles has also been honored with a number of awards, including the Cardinal Spellman Award for his distinguished achievement in theology, Boston College Presidential Bicentennial Award, Religious Education Forum Award from the National Catholic Educational Association, America Magazine's Campion Award, F. Sadlier Dinger Award for his contributions to the catechetical ministry of the Church, and The John Paul II Award from The Institute for the Psychological Sciences for his ongoing commitment to the teachings of Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Dulles is currently the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University in New York, a position he has held since 1988, and also teaches at St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie, New York.
Additional speakers include seniors Todd Huff and Julianne Adams. Huff, a native of Bremen, Indiana, is both the Valedictorian and "Senior of the Year" for the class of 2003. His plans after graduation include attending Purdue University as a teaching assistant while earning his master's degree in Chemistry. Senior Class Vice President Adams hails from Bradley, Illinois, and will speak at commencement on behalf of her class. Her post-graduation plans include prospective news production in the Chicagoland area.

Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation, is a four-year, Catholic liberal arts college offering 79 major, minor and pre-professional programs. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Indiana, approximately ninety minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of approximately one thousand students.
