Want To Get A Head Start?
There are several things you can do to get a head start on the selection
process:
- Assess your interests. What's your passion? What
excites you? What kinds of careers intrigue you? Ask your guidance counselor
about self-assessment tools that can help you identify career possibilities
that match your interests.
- Examine your abilities. What are your strengths and
weaknesses? What are your best subjects? Do you like facts and figures?
Do you enjoy the flexibility of using creativity to solve problems?
Do you tend to think outside the box?
- Consider your values. What's important to you? Do
you want to help people? Do you enjoy working alone or in groups? What
kind of impact do you want to have on society?
- Investigate careers. Interview people working in
careers that interest you. Ask your guidance counselor for career resources.
Check Web sites for information about different occupations, including
SJC's Career Development Center Web site.
Get a part-time job or volunteer your time in a field of interest. Complete
a career interest inventory during your Freshman Seminar at SJC.
- Gather insight. Confer with the people who know you
best, such as your parents, teachers, coaches, clergy, and friends.
What kinds of careers do they envision for you? What talents or abilities
do they see in you that you may have overlooked?
- Evaluate your options. Review the academic programs
offered at colleges that interest you and see what jumps out.
- Give us a call. We'd be happy to help you sort through
the options and find the major that best suits you. Contact the Office
of Admissions by calling 219-866-6170 or 800-447-8781, or send an e-mail
