Psychology - The science that deals with mental processes and behavior.

Are you the type of person who always asks "Why" and "How"? Do you dream of having an office complete with a timer and reclining couch?

Why Psychology?

Fact 1: Psychology majors study how and why organisms do what they do, allowing them to have a better understanding of human behavior.

Fact 2: Psychology covers a broad range of fields, including biology, anthropology, and sociology.

Fact 3: With a degree in Psychology, you can choose from careers in counseling, case working, vocational placement, and others, as well as pursue an advanced degree in other areas such as law, medicine, journalism, or business administration.

Why Psychology at SJC?

Variety: The Psychology Program at SJC covers the four major questions associated with every aspect of Psychology.

  • Action: What is it that organisms do, and how do they do it?
  • Learning: What do organisms know, and how do they come to know it?
  • Social Behavior: What influences do social interactions have on the individual's actions, motives, thoughts, and knowledge?
  • Individual Differences: How and why do individuals differ in their actions, thoughts, and social behaviors?
Dedication to Excellence: The Psychology major at SJC prepares students for continuing education on the graduate level or for immediate employment in clinical, counseling, or experimental fields. The academic approach SJC takes to Psychology covers a wide range of behaviors. The Psychology Department also strives to introduce students to a wide range of vocational paths.

Hands-on Experience: The Psychology faculty at SJC encourage all of their students to participate in internships. Some common internship opportunities include the Jasper County Crisis Center, Wabash Valley Hospital, and the Jasper County Youth Center. (Success Stories)

Faculty and Class Size: SJC strives for high-quality faculty, which is why the professors in the Psychology Department each have a doctorate degree in their fields of expertise. The Psychology Department faculty also have different areas of expertise, which complement each other to ensure that you will receive a broad and diverse learning experience.
