and rhythm.

Why Music at
SJC?
Variety: When studying Music at SJC, you can concentrate in Applied Music, Music Education, Church Music, Theory and Composition, or Music/Business Administration. The Music Department also offers a Master of Arts in Music with concentration in Church Music and Liturgy and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Liturgy and Music.
- Applied Music: If you want to pursue a solo career,
perform with major ensembles, or give private or group lessons, this
is the concentration for you.
- Music Education: If you are looking for the knowledge, skills, and methodology necessary to succeed in the teaching profession, you are looking for Music Education. With this degree, you are qualified for teacher certification in Indiana, the surrounding states, and additional states that have reciprocal certification with Indiana.
- Church Music: With this concentration, you can prepare for a career in Liturgical Music. You may emphasize/specialize in organ, voice, choral conducting, piano, guitar, or composition.
- Theory and Composition: If you want to compose the
next great symphony or arrange music for the next big Broadway show,
then this concentration is for you.
- Music/Business Administration: This area combines
studies in music and business. Experience in both areas often takes
graduates into a broad range of fields known as the "music industry,"
including retail sales of music or instruments, music publishing, administrative
opportunities in the recording industry, and such management-related
fields as arts administration, orchestra management, artists' arrangement, tour-guiding,
travel-planning, and copyright law.
Dedication to Excellence:
Music majors, Music group majors, and Music minors are required to participate in at least one of the following during each academic semester: Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Choir. The Music Department also offers the Jazz and Pep Bands as well as a Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The Band and Choir Programs offer a variety of musical experiences and are open to qualified students regardless of their majors. All ensembles perform regularly in concert on campus, and many have the opportunity to tour and perform for a variety of audiences. Performance scholarships are available to band and choir participants.
Hands-on Experience:
The faculty at SJC encourages all of their students to pursue internships. Common internships in the Music Department include music business, student teaching, and music stores. SJC also offers private lessons for a variety of instruments and gets its students involved in music liturgy at local churches throughout Jasper County. The Music Department assists in coordinating a Lenten Concert at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Rensselaer. (Success Stories)
Faculty and Class Size:
The Music Department at SJC consists of faculty who hold master's or doctoral
degrees in their fields of expertise. Class sizes range in size depending
