Mass Communication - The field of study that examines how humans create messages using electronic symbols and spread these messages to a large, scattered, heterogeneous audience.

Have you ever dreamed of being an actor, anchor, or DJ? Did you know that the way you are sitting right now is communicating at least five things to someone watching?

Why Mass Communication at SJC?

Variety: When studying Mass Communication at SJC, you will acquire audio and video production skills and explore topics such as media sales, broadcast management, ethics in media, and broadcast journalism. In addition to contributing to a solid liberal arts education, this major provides abilities crucial to any personal and professional success, and coursework in Mass Communication is excellent preparation for a variety of career choices.

Dedication to Excellence: At SJC, we can tailor each major to meet your needs. The Communication Department at Saint Joseph's College offers a comprehensive course of study in rhetoric, communication theory, mass communication, and theatre. From the introductory courses to the capstone Senior Seminar course, the Communication Department prepares students for the future.

Hands-on Experience: The radio and television studios at SJC have professional, broadcast-quality equipment and students are encouraged to get involved in their freshman years. You can get involved as a reporter, anchor, producer, writer, or camera operator for WPUM TV6. You can be a DJ and have your own show on 90.5 WPUM Puma Rock. You can also get involved in the Columbian Players (the oldest existing club on campus) and be part of one of their many stage productions. Many Mass Communication students at SJC also take part in internships. Some recent radio and television internships include: WHZR in Logansport, Indiana; WTTW, WJMK Magic 104.3 in Chicago, Illinois; WLFI TV in Lafayette, Indiana; and The Golf Channel in Orlando, Florida. Faculty and Class Size: Professors in the Communication Department each have a master's degree in their fields of expertise in addition to extensive experience from states all over the country. Class sizes range between 10 and 25 students. (Faculty Profiles)
