ChemistryDivision: Natural Science Department: Chemistry Chemistry - The science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of a substance. Do you like experiments? Why should you have to experiment with your future? Why Chemistry? Why Chemistry
at SJC?
Physical Science Teaching: The Chemistry major coupled with a minor in education will lead to a license to teach physical science (chemistry and physics) at the middle school and high school levels. A second license to teach Life Science can be obtained with a minor in Biology or a second license in Earth/Space Science can be obtained with a minor in Earth and Space Science. Dedication to Excellence: At SJC, you will be challenged. Chemistry students at SJC spend much of their time in the newly renovated laboratories, outside the classroom gaining field experience, and in the library doing research. The Chemistry Department requires a seminar course for all Chemistry majors which allows students to practice communication skills and writing for the sciences, as well as think through ethical issues in science. The Chemistry Department has also had a 100% placement rate in medical schools for many years. Hands-on Experience: At SJC, we take pride in providing our students with the hands-on experience they need to survive in the work force. The Chemistry Program at SJC offers opportunities to work with equipment in your first year. The Chemistry faculty encourage all of their students to pursue internships. Common Chemistry internships include Eli Lilly and the American Institute of Toxicology Laboratories in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Success Stories) Faculty and Class Size: Our Chemistry Department consists of professors who each hold at least one doctorate degree in their fields of expertise. Ranging from 10 to 20 students, the average class size is small, allowing faculty members to become involved with off-campus projects in order to bring new knowledge to their students.
