Gregorian
Chant Institute
Division: Music
Program: Gregorian Chant Institute
Gregorian Chant - the monophonic, rhythmically free
official chant of the Roman Catholic Church.
Are you interested in studying one of the most unique
types of music in the world?
Why Gregorian
Chant?
Fact 1: Although much of the music in our churches today
is vernacular in text and measured in rhythm, the pure sound of the Latin
words and the beauty of the free-rhythmed Gregorian Chant can still be
heard around the world.
Fact 2: It is the Catholic Church's most significant
contribution to the musical tradition of the West.
Fact 3: Qualified instructors in the unique rhythm of
Gregorian Chant are quite rare and therefore very marketable.

Why Gregorian
Chant at SJC?
Distinctiveness: Saint Joseph's College is one of the
few places in the United States where Gregorian Chant can be studied under
an authentically-trained master of Gregorian rhythm and interpretation.
The goal of SJC's Gregorian Chant Institute is to arrive at an authentic,
prayerful, and aesthetically satisfying interpretation and chironomy of
Gregorian Chant.
Flexibility: Classes can be taken for graduate or undergraduate
college credit or simply for personal fulfillment, and both first-time
participants and Institute veterans may enroll.
Faculty: You'll be learning from Rev. Lawrence Heiman,
C.PP.S., an established music professional whose doctoral degree is from
the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome, where he specialized
in Gregorian Chant under the renowned Eugene Cardine, O.S.B.
