SJC Security and SafetyReporting a Crime or Emergency Responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure environment in which to live, work and study rests with all members of the Saint Joseph's College community. It is not enough to expect that others will ensure the safety of you and your friends, but rather that each of us be engaged in, and supportive of, the effort to create a rich and wholesome environment compatible with the mission of Saint Joseph's College. Community members, students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to report all crimes and safety related incidents to the Saint Joseph's College Security and Safety Department in a timely manner. Any suspicious activity or person seen in the parking lots on the grounds, inside buildings or around the residence halls should be reported to the Security and Safety Department immediately. To report a crime or an emergency on the Saint Joseph's College campus, call extension "1" from a campus phone for immediate assistance from a security officer, or dial 866-6129 and then follow the instructions provided in the recording. For a non-emergency security or safety related matter, call Security at extension 6129 or, from off campus phone system, (219) 866-6129. In response to a call, a security officer will take the required action by either responding in person or by asking the caller to report to Security and Safety to file a report. If an ambulance or assistance from the Jasper County Sheriff's Department or Rensselaer Police Department is required, Security and Safety will contact the appropriate department. All Security and Safety incident reports are forwarded to the Dean of Students Office for review and potential action. If a sexual assault or rape should occur, staff will offer the victim a variety of services, including transportation to the hospital and referral to counseling on campus. Rensselaer has a Crisis Center with trained sexual assault advocates available at the Jasper County Hospital. In addition to our desire to prevent criminal behavior, crimes should be reported to the Security and Safety Department to ensure inclusion in the annual crime statistics, and to aid in providing timely warning notices to the community, when appropriate. Saint Joseph's College falls within the jurisdiction of the Jasper County Sheriff, and crimes may be reported to the Jasper County Sheriff at 866-7334. |
