Statement of Responsibilities

Using the SJC Network

Along with the privilege of using the computer facilities provided at Saint Joseph's College come certain responsibilities, some of which are enumerated below but many of which fall under the realm of common sense, common courtesy and the SJC Computer Usage Policy. Flagrant, serious, or repeated violations of these rules, as well as others that may be formulated and propagated by the Administration of the Computer Center, will result in the suspension of privileges on the network. (All SJC students must agree to abide by the following rules to obtain an account on the SJC Network.)

1) I will respect the privacy and integrity of information that belongs to other users; I will NOT attach to their directories for the purpose of transferring information (either data or programs) unless that use has been sanctioned by the other user and cognizant faculty.

2) I will NOT tamper with information that is not mine, purposely inhibit other users from accessing information that rightfully belongs to them, or "maraud" through data storage space that does not concern my legitimate interests as a user.

3) I will NOT engage in any "hacking" or "cracking" activities while utlilizing any of the computer network resources of Saint Joseph's College.

4) I will NOT install unauthorized software on any Saint Joseph's College computer.

5) I will NOT knowingly perform work for someone who has been assigned that work in relation to course work at the college.

6) I will respect the right of all users to access documentation that has been made available to the computer labs by treating such documentation respectfully and leaving it in its assigned place when I have finished with it. I will not move any documentation without the permission of the lab monitor on duty.

7) I will NOT use College equipment for personal gain or unlawful purposes.

8) I recognize that SJC owns all of the equipment and retains the right to access my files to perform system maintenance, including the removal of all unnecessary files, such as games, backups, pictures, AV files, etc.

9) I understand that management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone acting in an inappropriate or detrimental manner. Anyone found using another person's account may lose their access to computer equipment as well as the individual who gave them access to their password.

10) The mail service is a useful and powerful tool. I will NOT use it in a frivolous manner, nor will I harass other users by sending senseless or inappropriate messages. Anyone "spamming" or sending chain letters will risk losing their accounts completely.

11) I will NOT eat food or drink beverages around or near the computers.

12) I agree to neatly place all scrap paper in the recycle boxes provided in each lab.

13) I will NOT smoke or chew tobacco in the computer labs.

As an SJC Network and/or Internet user, you are expected to abide by these rules. If you have any questions, ask a lab monitor, call the help desk at Ext. 6111 or send email to admins@saintjoe.edu.
