Network Drive Quota

Peace, love and sharing of the SJC Network resources...

[ Quota Policy | Increasing Your Quota | What Are You Storing? ]

The SJC Network has greater than 1000 users. And, all of those users have personal "SJC Network drives". Furthermore, all of those SJC Network drives are spread across 3 file servers. The students' drives are all on one server (our highest capacity file server). The employees' drives are all on another server. And, the Academic Computer Center (ACC) administrators' drives are on another server.

What I'm getting at with this is "sharing". We have a finite number of resources, here, to work with, so we can't give everyone unlimited access to those resources (or, we'll run out!). So, we have to share. And, to enforce the practice of sharing, we've had to implement a quota system to ensure that our resources are shared fairly.

Quota Policy

Currently, the only group of users that we have had to implement this quota system for is the students on campus, as the students' file server has been to "the brink of its capacity" and back a few times. The quota system that we've implemented for the students is as follows...

  • All students begin with a twenty megabyte (20 M) quota
  • According to need and responsibility, we may increase the quota for a given student.
  • Our server does a daily check to see that students are adhering to their given quota.
  • If a student exceeds his/her quota, our server informs us of this and also sends the student an email.
  • Currently, the student has 3 days to remedy the problem.
  • If 3 days pass and the student is still in excess of his/her quota, then the student's account is disabled.
  • The student then has 7 days to come to the computer center and remedy the problem.
  • If 7 days pass and the student is still in excess of his/her quota, then the computer center staff will go into the student's SJC Network drive and delete files for the student.

Increasing Your Quota

This quota has been implemented to prevent the students' file server from exceeding its physical capacity as well as our capacity to manage the server. If you are a student and you feel that you need more storage space on the student file server than what you have currently been alloted as your quota, then you should contact the staff in the ACC, and request that your quota be increased. Our decision to set your quota is based on the following...

  • Are you using your SJC Network drive for academic purposes?
  • What sort of responsibilities and commitments have you undertaken for The College?
  • How efficiently are you using your SJC Network drive?
  • How close is the file server to its physical capacity?
  • How close are we to our management capacity for the server?

You should be prepared to answer the first three questions. The bottom two are our responsibility.

What are you storing in your SJC Network drive?

To start with, you will probably want to know how much storage space you are occupying with your SJC Network drive. If you have exceeded your quota, then you should have received an email from your file server, which should have told you how much storage space you are occupying on the server. If you have either added or deleted items to/from you SJC Network drive since you received that email, then you may wish to check again. Or, if you are just curious and you want to make sure that you don't exceed your quota, then you may also want to check. To find out how much storage space you're occupying with your SJC Network drive click here.

When you visit the webpage link above, you will be asked to enter in a username and a password. You should enter in the username and password that you use to login to the SJC Network. If this does not work for you, contact us and let us know. Please be sure that you are typing your username and password correctly before contacting us (remember, your username and password are case-sensitive).

Once you've determined how much storage space you're occupying, you may want to find out what files are using up that space. An important thing to know before you start looking is that there are actually some files that we put in your SJC Network drive for you. To learn more about these files and how they may affect your SJC Network drive storage space, click here. As a quick note, these files include some of your e-mail folders. To learn how to clean these folders, click here.

Along with the files that we store in your SJC Network drive for you, there are undoubtedly files in your SJC Network drive that you've put there on your own. If you want to view those files and see how they are affecting your SJC Network drive storage space, you should do so with Microsoft's Windows Explorer. If you are not familiar with Windows Explorer, then you may want to check out this page. It shows you some very basic stuff about Windows Explorer. Once you've read that, then you may want to click here to visit a webpage the explains a bit more about Windows Explorer and may help you determine how big some of your files are on your SJC Network drive.
