Opportunities for Hands-on Experience
In order to ensure that our students are ready to enter the workforce, the Department of Exercise Science designs courses to give students “real life” experience. For example, SPM 425: Field Experience in Sports Management, students are given the opportunity to participate in field experiences and investigate career paths that interest them. Recently, students have explored careers in sports law, sports marketing, and sports psychology. Students have also explored specific occupations, including positions as athletic directors, merchandising and licensing liaisons, sports agents, sports historians, sports information directors, sports reporters, and talent scouts, just to name a few.
In EXS 329: Fitness Assessment and Exercise Instruction, Department of Exercise Science students gain experience by acting as personal trainers for volunteer participants. Over the course of the semester, the student meets with participants two to three times a week, where the student is responsible for helping his or her participant establish fitness goals and designing a program that will meet these goals. By offering courses that give students practical experience, the Department of Exercise Science is able to ensure that their students are prepared for a wide array of career paths.
Students enrolled in majors within the Exercise Science Department have opportunities to gain hands-on experience, outside of their coursework, that are available right on campus. Performance Scholarships of $2,000 are available for students interested in working in the athletic training clinic under the supervision of certified athletic trainers. Department of Exercise Science students can also work as fitness monitors for the campus wellness program.
