SJC Computer Lab Information

How fast is the connection?
At the time of this writing, Saint Joseph's College has three T-1 connections to the Internet. Each connection moves data at a rate of 1.5 Mb per second. All residence halls have access to the SJC campus network and to the Internet. During the summer of 2007, we are planning to join the I-Light2 network which will increase the speed of our network.

Wireless Connections
Currently Justin Hall, Schwietermann Hall, and the Residential Suites do not have wireless access points installed in public areas. All other buildings offer the SJC wireless network to users. Wireless routers are available to rent from the Computer Center for those residents who have limited or no wireless access.

Computer Lab Information
The Core Education Center has a lab located on the first floor in room 108 and houses 31 computers. The Arts and Science Building has a lab located on the second floor in room 219 with 31 computers. The Robinson Memorial Library has a lab containing 5 computers. In addition, various departments have labs for student use.

SJC ID Required To Access Lab
The large computer labs are open to SJC staff, faculty and current students only. In order to use a computer in one of these labs, you will be required to present your SJC ID to the lab monitor on duty.

No Food, No Drink, No Smoking, No Tobacco Policy
There is a policy of No Food, No Drink, No Smoking and No Chewing Tobacco in the lab. These rules are strictly enforced and failure to comply will result in the loss of lab privileges.

Computer Lab Hours
The hours that the large labs will be open are posted on a schedule in the hallway outside the labs. The labs are closed during specific times for professors to hold classes and these times are noted. As a general rule, the labs are available Monday through Thursday 8 AM - 12 AM, Friday 8 AM - 4 PM, and Sunday 1 PM - 10 PM.

Software Installed
The open lab machines run the Windows and Linux operating systems. They also have many applications installed including Firefox, Thunderbird, Matlab, Maple, C++, SPSS, Perl, Java, and the Microsoft Office suite that consists of Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. In addition, there are several applications that are designed for use in specific classes. No SJC machine has Microsoft Works installed so all documents created in Works will need to be converted to Word format if you choose to print in the lab.

Microsoft Office On Campus
SJC uses Microsoft Office version 2002. If you have a more recent version of Office installed on your personal computer such as Office 2003 or Office 2007, you will need to save your documents into the 2002 version to be able to print in the lab or to be able to send to your professors.

What about printing?
Each of our computer labs has a laser printer available for students to use. Students can print directly from any lab machine to the printer. If you don't have a printer in your room, you can save your information to a floppy disk, zip disk, flash drive or to your network drive and use the printers in the lab.

Ways to Find Help in the Lab
There are students working in the labs during open lab hours to assist you. They will have a sign located on their computer that designates them as a Lab Monitor. They are able and willing to assist you with problems that arise while you are working in the lab.
