Adam Ruggles, a senior from Haubstadt, Ind., has been named Saint Joseph's College's class of 2012 valedictorian. A double major in Political Science and Philosophy, Ruggles' post-graduation goal is to attend law school at the University of Notre Dame.
Ruggles is the youngest of four children, born to Joseph and Maureen Ruggles, and was raised in Haubstadt, a small, rural, German-American community in southern Indiana. He attended Saint James Catholic School before graduating from Mater Dei Catholic High School in Evansville, Ind.
Ruggles says he chose SJC because of its size and strong Catholic tradition. Although those things are still valuable to him today, he now feels that the aspect of SJC he likes most is the close bond that students form with their professors.
Ruggles will graduate from SJC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Philosophy. During his time at SJC, Ruggles has been heavily involved with many clubs and organizations, most notably Campus Ministry and Student Association. He has also been active as a tutor, writer for The Observer, and Writing Clinic worker.
Ruggles has chosen to pursue a legal degree in health law.
"I firmly believe that the notion of service is intrinsically woven into the legal system," said Ruggles. "This intrinsic service aspect and the classes taken at SJC have confirmed my decision to one day become a health law attorney. With a degree from SJC, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals, namely continuing my education within the highly competitive and important field of law, while also continuing my dedication to the service of others."
