MUSIC DEGREES
The Bachelor of Arts with Concentration in Applied Music prepares students to pursue solo careers or studio teaching, perform with major ensembles or continue with graduate study. The curriculum emphasizes applied music and is supplemented by advanced theory, literature, and history courses.
The Bachelor of Arts with Concentration in Music Education provides students with the knowledge, skills and methodology necessary to succeed in the teaching profession. An experienced Saint Joseph's College faculty instructs and interacts with students on campus, while classroom placements and student teaching are supervised by highly qualified teachers in the public schools. Students earning this degree are qualified for teacher certification in Indiana, the surrounding states and 21 additional states which have reciprocal certification with Indiana. All-grade, all-area majors are certified to teach vocal, instrumental (strings and winds), and general music in kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Bachelor of Arts with Concentration in Church Music and Liturgy prepares students for careers in Liturgical Music. Students concentrating in church music may emphasize organ, voice, choral conducting, piano, guitar, or composition.
The Bachelor of Arts with Concentration in Theory and Composition prepares students to pursue careers as composers or arrangers, or to continue with graduate study. The curriculum emphasizes music composition, arranging, music theory, and applied piano.
The Bachelor of Science in Music and Business Administration combines studies in music and business. Business courses include accounting, management, marketing, microeconomics, macroeconomics, finance, and statistics. Music courses include music theory, history, conducting, applied music, and ensemble participation. Having completed the business courses, students may work in general business or industry fields such as finance or real estate or be admitted to a graduate school to pursue an MBA degree. The music courses allow pursuit of a graduate music degree, performance career, or studio teaching. However, experience in both areas often takes graduates into a broad range of fields known as the "music industry." Included are retail sales of music or instruments; music publishing; administrative opportunities in the recording industry; and such management-related fields as arts administration, orchestra management, and artists' agents.
ENSEMBLES
While all College students are encouraged to perform for academic credit in one of the many Department of Music ensembles, Music Majors, Music Group Majors, and Music Minors are normally required to participate each semester of enrollment in at least one of the following: Marching Band; Symphonic Wind Ensemble; Concert Choir. The band and choir programs offer a variety of musical experiences and are opened to qualified students regardless of major. All ensembles perform regularly in concert on campus and many have the opportunity to tour and perform for a variety of audiences.
