Political Science at SJC:
The political science major offers students an opportunity to gain a systematic understanding of the role of government and political behavior in human societies of the past and present. Such understanding is an important element of a modern college education and contributes significantly to professional and civic judgement. Concentration in political science serves as an appropriate undergraduate preparation for the teaching or practice of politics, the entry into law school, government, business, teaching or the foreign service.

The Political Science Major (37 credits):
Required of All Students (22 credits):

    POL 101 - American Politics
    POL 102 - Comparative Politics
    POL 103 - World Politics
    POL 104 - Political Theory
    POL 225 - Statistics
    POL 223 - Research Methods in the Social Sciences
    POL 401 - Seminar in Political Science

Students must also specialize in two of the following three subfields. One subfield, from which the students will choose three courses (9 credits), will constitute the student's primary subfield. The second subfield, chosen by the student, will constitute the student's secondary subfield. Six credits must be taken from this subfield.

    POL 304 - Presidency and Congress
    POL 403 - Constitutional Law - The American Community
    POL 404 - Constitutional Law - The Bill of Rights
    POL 405 - Policy Analysis

Comparative and International Politics Subfield:

    POL 209 - US Foreign Policy
    POL 248 - International Relations Since 1945
    POL 310 - Women in Politics and Development
    POL 406 - Human Rights
    POL 307 - International Law & Organizations

Political Theory Subfield:

    POL 342 - Traditional Political Policy
    POL 342 - Modern Political Philosophy
    POL 406 - Human Rights
    POL 434 - Philosophy of Law
    POL 443 - Collective Action & Social Change


The Political Science Minor (18 credits):
Required of All Students (12 credits):

    POL 101 - American Politics
    POL 102 - Comparative Politics
    POL 103 - World Politics
    POL 104 - Political Theory

In addition, students must take two courses (6 credits) of political science electives; these courses must be taken from within two different subfields (see above).
