Economics at SJC:
SJC economics majors first concentrate on principles and then are challenged to apply those principles as they examine a wide range of issues.

The program offers students two tracks. The first, an Economic Specialist Track, is designed for students pursuing a traditional economics program, preparing for careers in industry, government or education, and considering graduate studies in law or economics.

The second is a Business Analyst Track that incorporates courses from the Commerce Division and is designed for students aiming for positions in businesses and financial markets or considering the MBA degree.

Students in both tracks wrap up their studies with a seminar in which they apply their academic experience to real-world economic problems facing individuals, firms or communities. This seminar work lets students exercise reasoning and analytical skills they've developed in the program, as well as demonstrate those skills to faculty and, where appropriate, industry professionals.

Special Note for Finance Majors:
With the addition of not many more courses, compared to your finance major and required minor, you can earn a double major at SJC in finance and economics. Ask your advisor or the Registrar for a look at what the double major would require. Or send a note to one of the economics professors.

*Both Calculus II and Accounting II have prerequisites.

The Economics Minor (18 credits):
Like most other disciplines at SJC, you can obtain a minor in economics with 18 credits. The introductory course, ECN 110 - The Economic Way of Thinking, counts toward the minor (and the major) and is a great way to test drive the kinds of issues and concepts we discuss in other economics courses.

Special Note for Commerce Majors:
An economics minor can add a broader perspective to your commerce major - one that employers will value. And since your commerce major already includes 9 credits of required economics courses, you can obtain an economics minor with just three additional courses (nine additional credits). Ask your advisor about establishing an economics minor.

Required of All Students: (6 credits)

    ECN 120-Principles: Markets and Prices
    ECN 121-Principles: Money and Income

Electives in Economics (12 additional credits):

Any additional 12 credits from the economics curriculum.
