Advising for Biology Major – Wildlife Ecology Track |
This page will help you see what courses you
should take and when you should take them. There are two basic things you
should keep in mind
FIRST - REQUIRED COURSES. FIRST PRIORITY – You must complete the required courses to obtain your degree in Biology or Biology-Chemistry, however you need not complete them all during your freshmen and sophomore years. You should take courses shown in bold letters at the times stated here or there will be trouble fitting those courses in later. Elective Biology courses have a little more latitude regarding when you can take them NOTE: required courses are determined by your major, so look in the College Catalogue where the required courses are listed..
SECOND - YOUR FIELD. There are many fields in
Biology at SJC. This is the Wildlife Ecology Track. Other Biology Tracks
have different requirements. Be sure to
look into the advising pages on the Biology Home Page
for your area of interest. This helps you know what courses to take and
what your minor should be.
Here is a very helpful guide for your planning and registration if you want a
BS in Biology that specializes in careers associated with Wildlife Biology and
Ecological Sciences.
FRESHMAN YEAR
Fall - Bio111 (General Biology I), Core
1, Freshmen Seminar, and 3-7 h from 3h Chm101 (Intro Chemistry), 4h Chm121
(General Chemistry I), ESS111 (Environmental
Geology), ESS126 (Introduction to Atmosphere, Climate, and Weather), ESS128
(Environmental Studies), ESS132 (Geography of Economic Resources), ESS 121 (General Physics I), Precalculus,
Calculus 1, PSY225 (Statistics), or intro course for your minor
Winter – Bio112
(Biology II), Core 2, and 3-8h from Chm101 (Intro Chemistry), Chm122
(General Chemistry II), Bio220 (Amphibian Population Research), MTH342
(Statistics), and Calculus I, or course for your minor
ELECTIVES
- Calculus 1 (or High School equivalent) is required if you are going to take Physics or the Math Department Statistics course
- You should take at least one appropriate math or statistics course during your freshmen year
- You should take at least one physical science (chemistry, earth & space science) course during your freshmen year
SOPHOMORE YEAR - NOTE pay attention to the catalogue, some courses are offered every
other year.

479 (Conservation & Restoration Ecology) this fall course is offered 2 out of every 3 years, Cores
5-10, Bio and ESS electives,
Independent studies, research or internships in
zoology, botany or ecology
1. BIOLOGY ELECTIVES (to total of 36 hours for biology major/Wildlife Ecology Track). Please note that some of these courses are offered every other year.

2. PHYSICAL SCIENCE & STATISTICS ELECTIVES You are required to take three electives from chemistry and/or Earth & Space Science and one Statistics course. Please not that some of these courses are offered every other year.

MINOR - BIOLOGY MAJORS - Most minor in Earth & Space
Science. To do that you can take 3 courses as part of the major and then
take at least 3 more ESS courses.
